What’s happening in #Sudan? Sudan’s paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF), have been engaged in conflict with the military since April 2023. The clashes, which follow months of heightened tensions between the two groups, have raised fears of a civil war. In recent weeks, the number of villages in Sudan that have been destroyed or damaged by fire has risen sharply, suggesting the country’s conflict is intensifying as it enters its second year. In response to the outbreak of armed conflict, CIR’s Sudan Witness actively monitors, documents and verifies human rights interferences and conflict dynamics on the ground. This post covers the recent fire damage in El Fasher, North Darfur.
CIR’s #SudanWitness team has verified fire damage to 24 towns and settlements west of the city of El Fasher, North Darfur in April, following reports of attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) this month. While CIR was unable to confirm direct RSF involvement, CIR has verified RSF presence in Sarfaya, one of the villages damaged by fire.
