The fact that anyone would try to trademark “chili crunch” is doing so in very poor taste but the fact that an AAPI led company with a Japanese name headed by a Korean American is trying to trademark a common use for a Chinese condiment is both disappointing and disorienting.
@ChefJonKung How is this any different than what Jing Gao did in 2020, except that you dislike one person and don't the other. latimes.com/food/story/202…
@ChefJonKung It's actual way more gray than this and pretty standard given US copyright law. The issue is the Patent office having little knowledge of Asian culture and improperly granting a trademark. But I get it. Chang is loathsome and this slots into a convenient narrative about him.
@ChefJonKung Maybe the Asian American community can do an online mass action- make homemade chili crunch and upload it on socials with the hashtag #chilicrunchisAsian to drown out that despicable “food entrepreneur”
@ChefJonKung There are so many different brands, though, how would that even work?
@ChefJonKung Oh damn, just let us have the chili and chill
@ChefJonKung I don’t know him but somehow I expect that from him…. #yikes
@ChefJonKung @Agent_Snark I was furious about this while dousing my noodles with chili crunch last night. The obscurity is astounding.
