So a government fund ( Saudi/ PIF) which has virtually unlimited resources defaults on its commitments to fund LIV, a professional golf tour that, if you believed them, was meant to grow the game globally. As I said at the beginnings of this ill conceived attempt to clean up the image of the Saudi government through LIV, the very nature of golf was drug into the sewer. An evil ethos of corruption and consumption invaded the game trying to replace the generosity of spirit (and philanthropy) that the game has been imbued with for the better part of a century. The LIV players went from being autonomous—picking and choosing where they play, sometimes on a whim and answering to nobody—to going where they were told, playing courses they likely didn’t care for, under conditions they had no say in and finally and most sadly, playing for a dictatorial theocratic murderer. So who is to blame for the damage done to professional golf? Not the Saudi government, evil people do evil things… but those who were essential in getting LIV off the ground and setting the cataclysmic events of law suits, discovery, defections, discord, greed, the massive career derailment or regression of almost all LIV players in motion…those who benefitted most from this destruction: Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau followed by EVERY player that took the money and inso doing became a puppet for a regime (against many ills) that butchered a journalist who spoke out against them.

Gabriel goes for the ball, absolutely. I don’t think anybody is saying he wakes up this morning planning to kick the goalkeeper in the head. But how many times do we see somebody get sent off and afterwards they’re saying, ‘I was going for the ball’? Of course you were. Most players who get sent off for these red card challenges are trying to win the ball. That doesn’t suddenly make the challenge safe. Once you miss it and your boot ends up in the goalkeeper’s face, the question becomes whether you’ve endangered an opponent. That’s what VAR has to seriously look at. Because if they look at it and decide it’s serious foul play, Gabriel is sent off. Arsenal are playing practically the entire match with ten men. Instead there’s no card and we’re playing on. That’s not a little decision. People will analyse the game afterwards and talk about possession, chances, substitutions, who played well. But you’re potentially talking about two completely different football matches depending on how one referee interprets five seconds. And that’s where the inconsistency frustrates people. Chelsea supporters will remember another challenge that was reviewed and punished. Arsenal supporters will find another one that wasn’t. I’m less interested in which fanbase can produce the better compilation. I just want to know what the rule is. Because if this is considered a normal attempt to play the ball, fine. Tell everybody. Goalkeepers might want to wear helmets, but at least we’ll have consistency.”
