If writing an allegorical fantasy or SF, do deep thinking about how your change affects the entire world. If you just substitute and have people deliver everyday lines and act in everyday ways otherwise, the disconnect will induce laughter, not insight.

Just because you have a capable woman in your story, it does not necessarily mean she is a “Mary Sue.” There’s a particular combination of charmed life and male fantasy to deserve that pejorative.

Some writers create backstories for characters and some don’t. Regardless, you have to have some semblance of how their history makes them tick.

If your intentions adaptation of a work breaks or contradicts the theme, don’t bother. You clearly don’t love the material enough.

Don’t bang your head when you’re stuck. Switch gears to another scene, another project. Your brain will work on it in the background and things will open up by the time you get back.

Guilt is a real factor for a writer, one that can sap the joy of writing away. Before you compromise on time, ask what your priorities are: your relationships, your aspirations. What’s left is often the trivial little foxes that steal your time. Look there and cut.

Don’t be afraid of messages. so long as they don’t come out obvious and ham fisted, you have leeway. If elegant and organic, a film with something on its mind only enriches.

Horror scripts should run shorter than average. The heightened emotional states and ratcheting up works best in shorter, more intense form.
