Actually, detail isn’t meant to be complex or pigeon-hole a player. It’s meant to be specific and give a player options so they can make the best decision that each moment requires of them. That’s why I say, you are not doing an injustice to your players by giving them detail. You are actually giving them a way out. A strong platform to make a good decision. You are helping them and they want your help.

I saw this comment come up on my feed and was intrigued by it. It highlights how it’s common for many to think that if you give players detail, your team immediately becomes ‘robotic’ I disagree

Much was spoken about Alonso’s tactical systems and philosophy. Unfortunately, I have seen a world class front three who have been given freedom to be creative in the final third… But not much else. I’ve said it since the start, Chelsea are extremely vulnerable at the back and the profiles of that midfield 2 can’t cope with the constant transition. Yes, we miss Caicedo. But there’s issues regardless. On paper a great back 3, but tactically there is zero cohesion there. It’s concerning

Three questions for every line in your game model: Specific? Situation, cue, action. Actionable? Can a player do it Saturday? Coachable? Can I build a practice where it happens or does not?

"When their centre-back receives facing his own goal, our nearest forward presses on a curve that blocks the pass to the full-back, and the winger jumps as the ball travels." Longer. Not more complicated. Simpler, because it says what to look for and what to do.

Football does not get more complicated as you go up the levels. It gets more precise. And confusing those two things is why so many coaches diagnose "overcoached" when the real problem is the opposite.

@CFCJnR There was no cohesion at all in that mid 2. James as good as he is, is not a good profile for that role as he simply can’t cover the ground. It’s why he’s been using Gusto there. Caicedo is a must!

One player would make a decision. The next player wouldn’t recognise what that decision now required from them. Individually, the actions could look reasonable. Collectively, they created problems. That distinction matters when analysing why a press actually breaks down.

Chelsea looked completely open against Arsenal. But “too open” isn’t an explanation. When I went back through the game, I found something much more interesting. The problem wasn’t always the first decision. It was what happened next. 🧵👇

So why didn’t we see the best of him last season? He was reportedly playing through a groin problem for much of the campaign. The scanning may still have been there, but an injury can affect your confidence to trust the picture and commit your body to the action.

I said Cole Palmer would win Player of the Season. His numbers last season didn’t exactly support that prediction: 26 games 10 goals 1 assist 12 matches without a goal contribution But this is what I was seeing 🧵
