Truth is, people still need purpose. And for many (or most) their job is their entire identity. I suspect the reason for this is mainly due to the breakdown of socialisation, partly because the econonic situation has demanded people move around for work (both domestically and internationally) but when (or if) everything does become automated, we're still going to need people to do something. Personally I think the most sensible thing to do would be to mandate things like community farming (permaculture, agroforestry) and care work as a requirement for receiving UBI credits. And additionally, with the economy no longer being a push or a pull factor for work, we can finally have some stability and let individual communities heal after half a century of insane economic and cultural changes.
