The optimistic case for AI, compute, and tech. No nonsense. By @edtarnowski | Views expressed are our ownopen.substack.com/pub/thecompute…Joined August 2026
Without human intervention, the AI-powered robotic surgeon achieved a 100% success rate across 8 cases, completing all surgical tasks.
This included identifying and grasping ducts and arteries, placing clips, and making necessary cuts

~60% of rural Medicare patients undergoing high-risk surgeries traveled >1 hr for care.
AI-powered advances in surgical robotics may be laying the groundwork for better equipping rural areas with specialized surgical capabilities, even w/o a human specialist physically present

AI is supercharging surgical robotics.
In 3 years, a roboticist’s work evolved from following a predetermined surgical plan in a controlled environment to demonstrating adaptive autonomy in executing a complex, critical phase of surgery.

AI is rapidly advancing surgical robotics, but a device capable of adaptive autonomy hasn’t been tested on people yet
Just this week, the DOD/W is betting millions on that changing soon, noting that surgical robotics could be a game changer for US soldiers on the battlefield.
There, otherwise treatable injuries can turn fatal when specialized surgeons can’t easily reach them.

Periods of transformative technological progress—driven by markets and a robust private sector—have left humanity overwhelmingly better off. Some say "AI is different." This is arbitrary. They said the steam engine was "different" too.
History tells us periods like this have turned luxuries, from air travel to automobiles to antibiotics, into normal parts of everyday life. They’ve created not only more jobs in place of those made obsolete, but jobs enabling a far better quality of life.
And at this point in the AI revolution, there's no evidence that this time will be different.

Fear sells. Fearmongering about AI and tech really sells.
I’m building the opposite.
Today, I’m launching The Compute Optimist (@ComputeOptimist). Analysis, reporting, and the receipts on the technologies poised to drive unprecedented human prosperity—if we let them.
Fear sells because it asks nothing of the reader except attention. Optimism has to earn it, since it requires actually making the case with evidence rather than just triggering alarm. This is the harder project, and the more useful one. Following along.

The Compute Optimist’s purpose is not to suggest that AI carries no risks, but to assert that the risk of suppressing AI development is far greater than the risk of forging ahead
