Derecho: widespread, very long-lived thunderstorm that can create straight-line wind damage similar in destruction to a tornado. To be classified as a derecho, the wind damage swath needs to extend more than 240 miles, with wind gusts of at least 58 mph along most of its length.

NC Private Road and Bridge team has completed over 4k site assessments to evaluate private bridges and roads were damaged or destroyed in Helene. The site assessments help the team better understand repairs needed, damages sustained, and the estimated time to repair.
