@mrjeffknox The RAF file on Beano 73 (DEFE 24/3129, UK National Archives) says two Navy F-14s and an RAF Phantom were sent, none saw it visually, and no ground or ship radar tracked it. RAF staff had a strong suspicion it was a mirage of lights on the Israel or Lebanon coast.
