@GhostofOkello I would also say that Cyril Punch's statement needs to be viewed within the context of the racist and biased worldview of many 19th century British people, hence his suggestion about "foreign" (non-African) influence supposedly causing Benin to have been a civilised place.
@GhostofOkello Perhaps it was a typo in this thread, but in Dapper's book I see "Oedo", not "Oedobe". I (and I believe most others) would take "Oedo" in Dapper's account to be a rendition of "Oredo", i.e. Benin City. Anyway, minor nitpicking aside, great thread 👍.
@GhostofOkello My apologies, I meant to write "but was probably not something that involved any significant economic benefit to Benin through whatever Warri traded" here.
@GhostofOkello existed, probably amounted to some symbolic, or political recognition of Benin by Warri as its suzerain, but was probably not soemthing that involved any significant economic benefit to Benin through whatever Benin traded. Dapper's account of Warri, if I recall correctly, does
@GhostofOkello I do agree that there was a significant period of time during which Warri was politically tributary to Benin, but I think that there was also a time where it was politically independent of Benin and that van Nyendael visited during the start of that period of independence.
@GhostofOkello capital. That is just a hypothesis or speculation on my part though, there's no actual proof that this was the reason. But once again, thanks for the reference. And yes I would appreciate it if you would dm me the book. Thanks.
@GhostofOkello in the 1700s or perhaps late 1600s during some war between Bornu and Kwararafa so perhaps that could be a factor in explaining the disorganized housing situation - there might have been recovery from a recent war with a powerful adversary that had managed to do damage to the
@GhostofOkello an anonymous 1823 description of Benin in the Royal Gold Coast Gazette. These accounts all contain some praise or admiration for aspects of the Oba's palace or the overall city that they found impressive. I agree that pre-1700s civil war Benin City was praised more highly though.
@GhostofOkello While this is basically correct, it should be noted that there are also some accounts from after the 1690s-early 1700s civil war that praise aspects of the city and/or the palace; namely the accounts of Landolphe, Labarthe, Lt. John King RN, George Brown, and
@GhostofOkello Hello Esteban Lucumi/Ghost of Okello. May I ask, which 1700s description of Ngazargamu are you referring to here, and was it a direct/firsthand account? My understanding was that Ngazargamu was also a pretty impressive city in its own right and was well laid out and organized.
@nianello6@GhostofOkello but that by Legroing's time (late 18th century), only the remains of the "wall" part of the iya around the city could still be seen, while the moat/ditch part of the iya was still basically intact.
@nianello6@GhostofOkello The most reasonable conclusion would be that some visitors could see, in the rampart earthen wall adjoining the "ditch" or moat, a real "wall" or even a strong earthen "fence" that was like a wall, while some others focused only on the "ditch"/moat aspect of the city iya
