#IOTA #IOTAHolders

In Canada, a new mom gets 15 weeks of maternity benefits plus up to 61 more weeks of parental. In the US, she gets 0 paid days. Same continent. Different planets. THE NUMBERS (see the card): Canada — 15 weeks maternity + 35 weeks standard parental (55% of pay) or 61 weeks extended (33%). United States — 0 paid federal days; FMLA gives 12 weeks unpaid, and only if your employer has 50+ staff. UK — 39 weeks. Germany — 14 weeks at 100% pay, plus up to 36 months of parental leave. Sweden — 480 days shared between parents. THE DECODE: Canada runs it through EI. Parents pick standard (higher weekly cheque, 12 months) or extended (smaller cheque, 18 months) — and can't switch mid-stream, so couples actually spreadsheet it out. Quebec opted out and runs its own richer plan, QPIP. The American side is bleak: no federal paid leave at all. Twelve states plus D.C. have their own programs; everyone else chooses between bonding with a newborn and paying rent. Millions of US mothers are back at work within weeks. MY TAKE: Canada's real innovation isn't the length — it's the choice. Standard vs extended turns parental leave into a design problem families solve for themselves: money now, or time later. Policy that trusts people to choose beats policy that chooses for them. If you could design it: longer leave with lower pay — or shorter with full pay?

Ever called an ambulance in North America and had a fire truck show up first? You're not imagining it — and it's by design. Three reasons: 1. Fire stations are everywhere. Toronto alone has 84 fire stations — the largest municipal fire service in Canada. They're positioned for fast fire response, which means they're closer to your neighbourhood than most ambulance bays. 2. Firefighters are trained medical responders. CPR, defibrillation, oxygen, bleeding control — they're certified first responders, not just people with hoses. 3. Dispatch sends the closest available unit. Toronto runs a 'tiered response' system: when dispatch confirms a life-threatening call, Toronto Fire is notified alongside paramedics. Ambulances are often tied up on other calls; the fire truck fills the gap. The scale is bigger than you'd think: about 65% of US fire department responses are EMS-related, and medical calls to US fire departments jumped from 5 million in 1980 to 23.5 million in 2018 (NFPA data). So next time a ladder truck rolls up before the ambulance — that's the system working, not a mistake. Did you know this, or did you also assume someone dialled the wrong number the first time?

Five winters in, and I still check Toronto's forecast like a stock ticker. My first taught me: -30 windchill is real, the downtown PATH is a lifesaver, winter tires aren't optional, and December sunsets come before 5pm. What did your first winter teach you?
