If you think he might be biased because BG3 is such a successful game, survivor syndrom and all, no, sorry, you're wrong. I've been part of 'marketing' a dozen games at a publisher that's very good and successful at talking to their niche for the past half-decade. It's how it is.
Slightly annoyed that @Cromwelp says it better than I ever managed to articulate (delighted in fact, I love the man); but I agree 100% with everything said there. This is what works, how it's shaping up to be, and you'll fail if you're not acknowledging and embracing it.

I see we've begun another round of discourse of: - Confident statement made based on experience that reads like it's blanket advice - Responses to that statement that take it as blanket advice and criticise it in other use cases/using different language to describe the same thing

He’s right about everything in this thread. Doesn’t matter what you call it: marketing or community building or GroWtH hAckiNG. The way we reach players is evolving.
RE this dumbass marketing thing. Yes, we don’t have a credited marketer. I know it’s weird. We paid A LOT of money to trial the industry’s best agencies for this shit and they came up with nothing good. We learned some genuinely meaningful, replicable things from it.

This logic sits parallel with my feeling that mastering and cornering a niche within games media, either as an individual writer or an outlet, ultimately pays huge dividends. People want to speak and be spoken to in direct terms, in the language they use as fans.
3) Control spend. We’re entering a product-focused era. Your grandma is on Facebook but you’re actively engaged with your hobby (gaming). Assume people are seeking out their niche. Find them. Talk to them.
