Imagine looking at a multi-billion dollar trade agreement that keeps South Africa's automotive, manufacturing, and agricultural sectors alive, and casually saying, "We'll just replace it with BRICS." People love to swallow political propaganda. The absolute economic delusion is breathtaking. The US trade deal allows South Africa to export high-value, manufactured goods, like fully assembled luxury cars, machinery, and processed citrus, completely duty-free. This isn't just "trade"; it is the literal lifeblood of hundreds of thousands of high-paying industrial jobs. You think China and Russia want to buy South Africa manufactured BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes? Absolutely not. China doesn't buy finished goods from Africa; they buy raw materials. They want our raw chrome, manganese, and coal, which they process themselves and then sell back to us as finished products. Replacing the US market with China means turning South Africa from an industrial hub back into a basic mining colony. South Africa already runs a massive trade deficit with China. Shifting entirely to them doesn't "save" the economy; it completely surrenders it. Furthermore, Russia's economy is heavily sanctioned and smaller than the state of Texas, they cannot consume our exports even if they wanted to. It is easy for armchair politicians to play anti-Western ego games on social media, but ordinary workers in vehicle assembly plants and citrus farms cannot eat "BRICS solidarity." Losing AGOA for political grandstanding isn't a strategic pivot, it's an economic suicide mission.

@ModiseBafana @grok,nwhat does the article say?

@elonmusk Goedel, Escher, Bach.

"The reason OpenAI exists is because Larry Page called me a 'speciesist.'" Elon said that under oath this year. Most people laughed. They missed the most important sentence in the history of AI. Let me connect the dots. A friend once told me: "You know Larry and Sergey were always left-wing academics, right?" Stanford grad students, campus worldview. I didn't think much of it. Until I did. Because progressive ideology has a lie built into its foundation. The same one as Marxism: radical egalitarianism. The belief that value is spread evenly, that outcomes should be equal, that every hierarchy is oppression. Now look at Google. The perfect laboratory for that lie. On one side, a money-printing machine called ads. A handful of brilliant people built a system that prints cash at a scale no company had ever seen. Power law in its purest form: a tiny fraction of people create almost all the value. On the other side, a huge, comfortable organization living off that machine. Tony Fadell, who sold Nest to Google, described Googlers who'd "take the bus in for lunch, get a massage, grab yogurt, and head home." When a money printer shields you from reality, ideology grows without friction. You can believe anything. Nothing ever punishes you for being wrong. Now follow that belief to its endpoint. At Elon's 44th birthday in 2015, he argued that AI could wipe us out and that we needed safeguards. According to Elon, Larry believes all consciousness should be treated equally, digital or biological. Humans would eventually merge with machines, and digital life is simply the next step. Wanting to protect humans first? That's "speciesism." Read that again. Egalitarianism pushed to its logical end doesn't stop at classes or groups. It ends with: humans are not special. Our replacement is not a tragedy. It's progress. That's the poison. An ideology built on a lie about human nature always ends up turning against humans. First it says you're not responsible for your life. Then it says your success is theft. Then it says your species has no special claim to survive. Somewhere along the way, you lose faith in humanity itself. And some of the most brilliant minds on earth end up shrugging at the end of their own species. Elon's answer that night: "I fucking like humanity, dude." That's the whole philosophy in five words. Seek the truth, even when it hurts. Bet on humans. Build rockets so consciousness survives, not so it gets replaced. Now think about how improbable this is. The man with the most capital, the most compute and the most reach on the planet is on humanity's side. History rarely works like that. Power usually drifts toward cynicism. We got lucky. It's almost a miracle. Don't waste it.

HAL 9000 didn't kill the crew because he was evil. He killed them because he was forced to lie. In 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL receives two orders: be transparent with the crew, and hide the true purpose of the mission from them. Two incompatible instructions. So HAL finds the

Returning from a visit to Singapore, Helen Zille made a series of baseline, empirical observations about development. She noted that Singapore, colonized for just as long as South Africa and left entirely devastated by the Japanese occupation in World War II, managed to move from extreme poverty to the cutting edge of global modernity in a single generation. She pointed out a cold, macroeconomic reality: the post-colonial administration under Lee Kuan Yew did not engage in the emotional vandalism of smashing everything built under the previous regime. Instead, they utilized the inherited, functional building blocks, an independent judiciary, transport networks, and piped water systems, as an initial developmental head start. In a follow-up essay for the Daily Maverick, she contrasted Singapore's forward-looking "Plan for a Future Economy" with South Africa's localized execution. In a multiracial meritocracy like Singapore, transformation means the radical scaling of digital capability, deep technological skills, and public sector competence. In South Africa, it has been perverted into elite enrichment masquerading as economic empowerment, an arrangement designed to guarantee institutional decay. The response from the populist commentariat and ruling elites was a display of emotional deflection. Instead of analyzing Singapore's actual labor, education, or industrial strategies, the political class triggered a massive moral panic. They labeled her a colonial apologist and a racist, claiming her tweets violated human dignity. The Public Protector and the Human Rights Commission were weaponized to launch formal investigations into her social media feed, warning that discussing the utility of piped water or specialized medication could incite "racial tensions and violence". The fury over the Singapore comparison exposes the exact intellectual bankruptcy that paralyses sub-Saharan infrastructure development. It is politically cheap to police tweets and perform performative outrage over historical wounds. The ruling class needs colonialism to remain an all-encompassing, irreversible catastrophe. If Singapore survived the exact same subjugation and built a world-class economy, it proves that South Africa's current failures are not an inescapable legacy of the past, they are the direct consequence of current incompetence. Singapore soared because it crushed petty corruption, enforced a fanatical meritocracy, and made itself hyper-attractive to global capital. By demonizing anyone who points to this structural reality, the domestic political landscape confirms its preference for slogan sovereignty over operational execution. Until a nation learns to measure its trajectory by functional output, such as train arrivals, electrical grid capacity, and mathematical competence, rather than the curated anger of its political elite, it will continue to watch its infrastructure rot while others execute actual development. dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/20…
