The best players I’ve ever been around truly didn’t care about pleasing anyone. They actually didn’t care what ppl think about them or say about them. They just played the game to play the game. When great players care what others think or say they end up falling short.

Watching the great FAB 5 doc on ESPN U and thinking about the amazing book Mitch Albom wrote about them. I read that book in 9th grade and remember I couldn’t put it down. There were lots of hoops books back then that young guys like me could read. Kids don’t do that anymore.

My biggest pet peeve when watching youth hoops is seeing kids who “drive into a pile.” Having your head up and knowing when to attack a seam and when they should kick early is so important. I ask kids, “would you willingly run right into a wall?” Of course not.

Lots of ppl clowning the WNBA best-of-3 format and I get it — should be best-of-5. But it does create drama: it’s super easy to be 1-1 and suddenly you’re in a must-win, go-home game. Every game feels like a Game 7.

With the NCAA going to 5 years some guys are going to have full portfolio’s of Real Estate, Stocks, GIC’s (Money Market Funds) when they finish their eligibility. A great start to their adult lives.

USports holding any power to force players to sit out for transferring blows my mind. Schools give scholarships limited to the full price of tuition (additionally capped at $5,000 in Ontario) which is very rarely over $6,500. They can give 33.6 out to a football team of 80+

I actually think they should just let it be any age as many transfers as you want. Let’s just make it like the States & let the kids decide what they want to do. Lots will say USports isn’t the NCAA, it’s about education etc but times have changed and it’s not just that anymore.

If U SPORTS really wanted to help the players, they’d allow transfers any year. Limiting it to 1st & 2nd year just makes it easier for big schools to recruit up. Nobody’s transferring ‘down’ after 2 years — this rule only benefits the top.

USports is going to have to start changing some rules & this new rule helps the players but I’m curious how the Coaches feel about this decision. We could have a portal situation where some USport schools essentially become feeders for the bigger schools.

Just saw Crestwood women’s prep program had 25 NCAA Div 1 coaches in attendance today. That type of exposure is just unheard of for regular high school programs in Canada.

One thing I miss is the best players being so damn competitive that they never lose a single game in practice. The “stormers” the guys that if they ever lose they storm off the court. Used to be the norm for the best players.

Looking forward 2 watching the HOF stuff tonight and hearing Carmelo’s speech. I remember seeing so many ppl say no chance Carmelo is going to the HOF when in reality there was actually no chance he wasn’t. Shows you how some ppl don’t know what a superstar is or are just haters.
