I don't watch much TV so I don't know much about Garron. I know many comedians pivot to the goldmine of "perpetually feeling oppressed" bigots, who want to blame immigrants for everything. If that's not his deal, then he should maybe consider reading more before talking.

In summary, video came across as repackaged far-right talking points that are mostly spouted by the worst people. That those talking points came after saying "Conor McGregor is not a good person but..." probably compounds the reaction to his sentiment. Stupid video, at best.

Not just a source but a definition of what he's comparing and a reference point for comparison. Violence or all crime? Much less safe compared to when? Factually the murder rate in Ireland in 2024 was the 4th lowest in the last 50 years and one of the lower rates in the world.

Moreover, the contention that quality-of-life is "going down for most people" requires a source. Every source I've checked, from the European Union to the UN Development Index to OECD Well Being Index, said quality-of-life has been rising. Cite a source or don't say it. 🤷‍♂️

To my mind it's the height of cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy to complain about 125,000 people fleeing war, famine and persecution. Millions of people left this island in broadly similar circumstances. Those Irish people went everywhere, too, not just to USA and UK.

This poll gets shared by anti-immigration dipshits, but stripped of context to attack non-white refugees. 125,339 persons given refugee status in Ireland in last 10 years. 112,189 (90%) of those persons fled the war in Ukraine, didn't apply for asylum, and are mostly white.

The current government is arguably the most right-of-centre in decades. They're already doing stuff like chartered flight deportations of persons negatively exhausted the asylum process i.e. judicial reviews finished. This is in response to people like Garron's concerns.

Even if you capped Ireland's population at 5.4 million and put a dome over island, so nobody could leave or enter: Age structure of population getting older rapidly and demand for health workers will rise dramatically. Older people require more healthcare than younger people.

It's easy to say "immigration is too high" but there are practical difficulties in reducing the number of work permits issued. In the last 3 years, 29% (32,329 of 110326) of work permits were in healthcare. That rises closer to 40% of work permits issued over the last decade.

Asylum claims are a small minority and even smaller for those granted. If you look at the last 10 years (Jan, 2015 - Dec, 2024), this is how it looks. Work Permits (Granted): 200,788 Student Visas (Applied For): 161,967 Asylum Claims (Made): 66,260 -of which Granted: 13,150
