@stephenasmith @ESPNBooger @stephenasmith I'm a fan, but I would be remiss if I didn't dispute your argument stating that TCU was blown out in the NC game. TCU beat Michigan to get there and UGA narrowly edged OSU to make it. We can't speculate, playing the game is the true measure.
I'm not trying to go all tinfoil hat here... I'm just presenting some thoughts and information that I find interesting 🤔 In case you weren't aware, ESPN has a 3 BILLION dollar media rights deal with the SEC that goes into effect in 2024. Keeping that in mind. FSU was still ranked #4 after the UF game. After Jordan's injury. After the offense didn't look great, but UGA (the SEC) was still in. Had UGA won, FSU probably doesn't fall to #5, and we never have this conversation. However, beating a top 15 team the following week got FSU dropped to #5 because the offense was being judged by a QB's performance who wasn't even going to be the starter in the playoffs. Still, the offense only put up 5 less yards than they did against UF with a true freshman QB against a higher ranked defense. That "bad" offense put up more yards than #1 Michigan did in the B1G CG. More points than #2 Washington scored on AZ State's 109th ranked scoring defense in late October with a Heisman finalist at QB. They won by a larger margin than Texas did over 5-7 TCU and the same margin as they did against 7-5 ISU in the month of November, with their starting QB. They didn't need a hailmary to beat beat a 6-6 team that got blown out by NM St the week before, like Alabama. Those games didn't define those teams, but FSU's did. Not the championship level defense they played with. The one that held the #1 offense in the country to 17 non-garbage time points. The same one that Bama gave up 28 to at home with Daniels knocked out of the game in the 4th quarter. That performance was too far in the rear view mirror for FSU, but not Texas' win over Bama that happened 1 week later. That was also against a Bama team that benched their current QB, struggled against USF, and then benched another QB. If FSU is a "different team" now, is it not possible that Bama was a different team back then? FSU's defense would have also gotten a 6'5 - 330 lb 4-star transfer DT back for the playoffs, too. Never mind the SEC's 7-9 OOC record or the 4-6 record vs. the ACC. Never mind that FSU beat a higher ranked team than Texas in the conference championship game with a true freshman, making his first start at QB. Coincidence or not, this move also happened to be during the same week that the SEC would have theoretically knocked itself out of the playoffs when Bama upset UGA. Uh oh! 😳 And they still left FSU ranked over UGA. So, the committee believes that after beating a worse team than FSU by 3 points in a neutral site that Bama was so good, they deserved to jump 4 spots and pass FSU. Also, the AP & Coaches poll has FSU in the top 4. So what happens? They dropped an undefeated P5 champion out of the playoffs for the first time ever and put in two 1-loss teams instead. One of those is a current SEC power brand, and the other will be an SEC team in 2024 when the media deal goes into effect. Oh, and both playoff games are broadcast on ESPN, btw. Yes, the ACC is an ESPN property, but they don't have nearly the money invested in that ACC as they do the SEC. It's no secret that ESPN's numbers have been dwindling and their parent company is losing money. What better way to create excitement for the SEC and boost the return on your investment! Especially when the team getting left out openly bashed an ESPN owned property for revenue issues and was open to joining a conference run by their largest competitor. As much as we love college football, it is a business, and companies only care about 1 thing.💰 I'm not saying that I've cracked some secret code. I'm just sharing my thoughts on this situation because, honestly, it sounds as plausible as any other scenario that tries to justify FSU getting screwed. And before you say it was the 55th SOS, Oregon's was 52nd, and they would have gotten in with a win. Before you say they didn't want to see FSU get beat badly in the playoffs, 70% of games in the CFP era have been decided by at least 3 scores. Just food for thought... Go Noles!
So, here's the issue I have with the "But FSU's offense was terrible in the last 2 games" argument. The committee thought 2 games with 2 different quarterbacks was enough to make the definitive determination that FSU's offense wasn't good enough to win and couldn't get better with a month to prepare and get healthy. FSU put up 16 points vs. UL's 21st ranked scoring defense with a third-string true freshman quarterback, making his first career start. I acknowledge that he threw for 55 yards and remind you that he was not going to start in the playoffs. Remember the time Bama used a different quarterback? They put up 17 points against USF's 123rd ranked scoring defense and threw for 107 yards. Does that game not count? What if Bama has to go to their backup in the playoffs? Their backup barely beat a 6-6 AAC team. Ours beat an SEC team on the road and a top 15 team in the conference title game. Good thing Bama is immune to injuries, and Milroe is guaranteed to stay healthy throughout the playoffs. (Sarcasm and I don't wish injury on anyone, but you get the point) What about the offense with Tate at QB? (Which is what we would have seen in the playoffs) Florida had the 79th ranked scoring defense and FSU put up 24 points, took a knee well within FG range to end the game, and that was with a backup quarterback making his second career start in front of 90k people. Texas beat 5-7 TCU (in mid-November) by 3 points at full strength in front of 50k people with their starting quarterback. TCU has the 80th ranked scoring defense, and Texas put up 29 points. They followed that up with a 24-point performance against 7-5 ISU (2 points came on a blocked PAT return). They have the 34th ranked scoring defense. Do we not think that FSU having a 4th year backup QB could have been worth 8 points vs UL (to use a more comparable defense) instead of a true freshman who had played just 21 snaps (317 less than Tate). It was ok to "assume" that FSU's offense wasn't good based on a 1 game sample set with Tate at QB despite the committee knowing he was going to be back and have a month to prepare. He was also surrounded by playmakers. Those are the committee chairman's words, not mine. My point is that you could argue that the FSU offense produced similar results on the field in more challenging situations than two of the teams that jumped them in a one game sample set. However, the committee didn't judge those teams on a one game sample set, so why didn't they do the same for FSU? What if Bama has to turn to their backup in the playoffs? Should we assume they aren't good anymore and implement a "standby" team, in case one of the 4 teams sustain a key injury? Was it the same offense without Jordan? Of course not, but could it have gotten better with time to prepare like Bama's offense was allowed to do when they had quarterback issues? Well, we'll never know because they decided not to give them the chance. This was the premise behind Jordan's heartbreaking post about the timing of his injury. They didn't have the time to sway the opinion of the committee because it happened late in the season, and the fact that they went 3-0 afterward wasn't the results that mattered. FSU's defense hasn't given up more than 30 points all season, including to the number #1 offense in the country. FSU has the #6 scoring defense. Michigan and Bama are the only playoff teams to face a top 10 scoring defense. UM averaged 26.6 PPG against them, and Bama scored 27 against the 1 they played. How many points did you think FSU needed to score? Washington has a great offense, but no seems to care that they have the 50th ranked defense. Lastly, before you say it's just unfortunate that it happened when it did, and the other 2 offenses looked better in championship week. The CFP has produced blowouts in 70% of their games. Obviously, assuming what a team can and can't do hasn't worked very well for the committee. They don't assume...👇 Oh, yes, they do.
There was always such a weird sense with Travis that he was too good to be true... he was too good to be so overlooked... he was too humble... he was too likable... he was too electric. His presence broke every narrative and stigma about FSU. He was so spectacular, and yet no matter what he did, the national conversation never seemed to fully include him... as if he was just a figment of our imaginations. In a darkly poetic way, he faded away from the stadium into the night, leaving us all to confront what he did and what he meant for that team and this city and this sport. He left with the team he built in a hole, left to fend for themselves, and to find an identity without him in it. His team responded with fury and rage and a new mandate to play as he had played. The torch didn't pass to one man but to an entire roster. He gave every last ounce to the game, and now it is up to his teammates, coaches, and his community to bring his proof of concept to life: that FSU is a program... not a player. Thank you @jordantrav13
A legend in every sense of the word. Thanks for everything Jordan Travis. #FSU
