The Uganda Shilling has faced depreciation pressures, weakening by 6% against the US dollar since the beginning of August 2026, as demand for foreign exchange has outpaced available supply. In response to emerging economic pressures, the Bank of Uganda raised the Central Bank Rate from 9.75% to 12% and increased the Cash Reserve Requirement to 13.5% in September. Government’s expenditure releases are being aligned with the monetary policy stance to support macroeconomic stability. #KnowYourBudget27

Bank of Uganda raised the CBR from 9.75% to 12% because 3,700/= to 4,100/= pushed fuel prices from 6,200to 7,000 with 200 taxplus which led to depreciation. @BOU_Official cannot afford to use $6.6B reserves to intervene but can easily raise the CBR because the season is not good for intervention, and it will be a waste so BoU uses 12% to make shilling expensive, traders import less, saves dollars, waits for December when diaspora $200M, coffee $150M, offshore traders $200M bring $550M, demand falls, then small intervention works, shilling 3,800, pump falls... #UgandaEconomy #PlenaryUG @Parliament_Ug @GovUganda #TimeToWork

Governor Michael Atingi-Ego explains the measures taken by BoU as the exchange rate approached UGX 4,000 per US dollar, including the recent increase in the Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR). The Bank has also raised the Central Bank Rate to 12.0% from 9.75% to prevent rising costs from spreading across the economy. The Governor emphasises that BoU does not target a specific exchange rate. The value of the Shilling is determined by market forces, with the Bank taking actions to ensure that movements in the foreign exchange market remain smooth.
