To accompany @carl_veller and @Graham_Coop's recent article in @PLOSBiology, I wrote an accessible primer on family-based genome-wide association studies: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) can be affected by confounding. Family-based GWAS uses random, within-family genetic…
@davidhughjones @kph3k A fair fight between two boxers is not one where both opponents have an equal chance of winning but one where both fighters are bound by the same rules. A fight in which the referee handicaps the stronger boxer or advantages the weaker boxer is an UNFAIR match. Equity ≠ fairness
@davidhughjones @kph3k I stumbled across this old tweet & wanted to correct my phrasing. It's not a Q of whether "fairness" should be the end goal but whether "equality of opportunity" should be. Equating these two moral concepts is a source of immense confusion in debates about "social" justice.

It is often said that "median incomes in the West have stagnated" (just heard it in a podcast). But looking at the data, that's not what I see. Yes, in some countries (Italy!), but by and large, I see growing median incomes. data: ourworldindata.org/explorers/inco…

Claude 3 is really amazing. Are there more than a dozen humans who could have given a better answer? infoproc.blogspot.com/2017/09/phase-…
@Gestalt_enjoyer Based on limited testing so far, yes.
"Read the room" is not advice for being right. It's advice for being popular. So when people give it, they're also implicitly telling us which they think is more important.
If you are planning to sequence a subset of a cohort that is already genotyped, you can enrich your sample for rare variant carriers by picking individuals with extreme phenotypic values but without high polygenic score ('deviators').
Should be illegal to put Andrew Neil in front of a select committee. 🔥
I would have hoped that in 2024 a central topic of the public conversation would be pandemic preparedness. I would have expected that we would all be keen to make the investments that make it less likely to suffer through another pandemic, with more deaths and lockdowns.
@DamienMorris "The chances that Harris has underestimated and misinterpreted compatibilism seem particularly good, since the points he defends later in the book agree right down the line with compatibilism; he himself is a compatibilist in everything but name!" -- Dan Dennett (!)
Dan Dennett was a great philosopher, skilled with words, images, thought experiments & intuition pumps. But unlike many clever philosophers (to borrow from PB Medawar) he had something important to be clever ABOUT, namely science. Much more yet, he was a dear friend. So very sad.
Obviously I would never use the phrase “fake news from the failing New York Times”, but upon reading this subheading (which gets Dennett TOTALLY wrong) I’m sorely tempted…
Dennett and Darwin dying on the same day as each other is a little on the nose
Remembering Charles Darwin #OnThisDay, as he died today in 1882. "There is grandeur in this view of life...from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
Very sad to learn of the death of my friend and influence Dan Dennett. Clear, witty, brave, deep, generous, fun. (Many of the obit notices flatten his ideas; I plan to write my own.) nytimes.com/2024/04/19/boo…
I have many pictures of Dan Dennett - this one captures one of his many qualities: He could do serious things with humour. But there is only sadness in his passing flickr.com/photos/axc/272…
“There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view I hold dear.” RIP Daniel Dennett
Daniel Dennett was my intellectual idol and my friend for 15 years. He was one of the kindest, most generous, most beautiful people I've known. I'm too devastated to write anything else right now.
Philosopher Daniel Dennett has died. dailynous.com/2024/04/19/dan…
Prometheus gathering in number. Wax editions complete, bronze casting next.
Prometheus is complete in bronze! It has been quite a process and a considerable labour of love. Really enjoying this in raw unpatinated bronze.
It’s fine. The quality of a study has absolutely nothing to do with the magnitude of a correlation. We don’t judge a study’s quality on its results, we judge based on the design, methodology, and conclusions. Small correlations may be very usable in certain research contexts
I've noticed it's becoming increasingly common in genomics to report results of regressions with ridiculously low correlation as "significant" based on a tiny p-value (for the hypothesis that the slope = 0). Can you guess R^2, the p-value, and where the data below was published?
