@Toothache01 @snezanalawrence Yes, it was a public talk (that the examiners also attended) which was then immediately followed by the private viva. I've not heard of any other UK universities using such a format. It was nice to also present some of my research publicly to others before the actual viva.

@jazzbluecat @NocardiB Try being in histopathology. Non-urgent surgical paraffin block turnaround is ~7 days (less for diagnostic specimens) simply because thats how long the process takes, plus the pathologist had to actually analyse the stained slides and will likely request special stains or IHC!

@ocyours @AmandaSober2026 They're essentially a big kettle that makes ~1-1.5 L soup in ~20-30 minutes after putting veg, stock etc in. There's a downward blade to mix + liquidise if smooth soup is wanted. I got my one cheap years ago, it's useful when you want to use stuff up or make fresh soup quickly.

@mindclimb25 @ArturAlucha The difference is electric showers in the UK/Ireland have the heating element in a sealed, waterproof, grounded unit with a dedicated circuit breaker that is on the wall rather than in the shower head like in Brazil. Brazilian style electric showers are illegal in the UK/Ireland!

@czbikerchick It's probably a incorrect aspect ratio flag then. They've likely accidentally transmitted it as anamorphic, telling your TV to "stretch" it to 16:9. Most times now 4:3 content is transmitted as 4:e, but sometimes it is stretched or cropped to 16:9 (both hated by me!).

@Toothache01 @snezanalawrence There was a similar two stage process at Dundee, although it was a public seminar plus audience Q&A followed by the private viva oral exam with the two examiners. As far as I know, Dundee is the only UK university to use that system. x.com/Davis16Samuel/…

@snezanalawrence Where I did my PhD at Dundee differed to most UK universities. They have a 1 hr public seminar, then the actual private viva with the 2 examiners (internal and external), who based on this and the thesis decide the outcome. My viva was ~3 hrs, but others varied a lot in length.

@AdamRochussen Be interesting to see how similar datasets compare for outside the US where set length 3-4 year PhDs are standard. However, I suspect a similar tend. Many of my older mentors/supervisors had their own labs by the time they were 30, near unimaginable with todays requirements.

@HeldinEU If it was an advance ticket booked online through the train operating company (TOC) they should automatically pay any compensation to your purchase method. If brought elsewhere or it is a flexible off-peak etc ticket then you can make a claim on the TOCs website.

@DrAnnieHickox A lot of recent articles in some newspapers etc seem to be making out that ADHD, other neurodivergent conditions and mental health conditions in general are more like moral failings rather than health conditions which can cause an enormous amount of difficulty and distress.

@martinimcfli @LBFlyawayhome As a young child In the early 90s, I had a set of Brio trains and tracks etc which came in a wooden box that was wheeled so it could be pulled along. I absolutely loved it and it was one of my favorite toys to play with for years. 😊
