Marine Sergeant David Caruso, 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq, November 9, 2004. A Naperville, Illinois native, Caruso had his heart set on the Marine Corps since the 8th grade. Once in uniform, he stacked qualification on qualification, graduating Marine Recon school, Army Ranger school, jump school, and military freefall, working reconnaissance for Marine special operations. He had been in Iraq since August 2004. The week he died, he called home to Naperville, as he had every week for five years, and told his parents they wouldn’t hear from him for a while because his unit was going to do some stuff. That stuff was the Second Battle of Fallujah, the fiercest urban fight American forces faced in the entire Iraq war. He was killed in action there at 25. Those who served alongside him remembered a man who embodied the term Recon Marine, a teammate of the highest caliber, the kind of brother other Marines still think of when they get tired or start to lose their way. Rest easy, Marine. Semper Fi.

Another one-man-army from WW2... not old enough to drink. 👏🫡 Here we go: On December 21, 1944, during the Battle Of The Bulge, Francis Sherman “Frank” Currey was an automatic rifleman with the 3d Platoon of the 30th Infantry Division defending a strongpoint near Malmedy, Belgium, when the enemy launched a powerful attack. Overrunning tank destroyers and antitank guns located near the Allies’ strongpoint, German tanks advanced to the 3d Platoon's position, and, after prolonged fighting, forced the withdrawal of this group to a nearby factory. Sgt. Currey found a bazooka in the building and crossed the street to secure rockets, meanwhile enduring intense fire from enemy tanks and hostile infantrymen who had taken up a position at a house a short distance away. In the face of small-arms, machine-gun, and artillery fire, Sgt. Currey, with a companion, knocked out a tank with one shot. Moving to another position, Sgt. Currey then observed three Germans in the doorway of an enemy-held house. He killed or wounded all three with his automatic rifle. Sgt. Currey then emerged from cover and advanced alone to within 50 yards of the house, intent on wrecking it with rockets. Covered by friendly fire, he stood erect and fired a shot which knocked down half of one wall. While in this forward position, he observed five Americans who had been pinned down for hours by fire from the house and three tanks. Realizing that they could not escape until the enemy tank and infantry guns had been silenced, Sgt. Currey crossed the street to a vehicle, where he procured an armful of antitank grenades. These he launched while under heavy enemy fire, driving tankmen from the vehicles into the house. He then climbed onto a half-track in full view of the Germans and fired a machine gun at the house. Once again changing his position, Sgt. Currey then manned another machine gun whose crew had been killed; under his covering fire the five soldiers were able to retire to safety. Deprived of tanks and with heavy infantry casualties, the enemy was forced to withdraw. Through his extensive knowledge of weapons and by his heroic and repeated braving of murderous heavy fire, Sgt. Francis Currey was greatly responsible for inflicting heavy losses in men and material on the enemy, for rescuing five comrades, two of whom were wounded, and for stemming an attack which threatened to flank his battalion's position. For his outstanding courage, superb skill and initiative, and unstinting loyalty to his brothers-in-arms, 19-year-old Frank Currey from New York was awarded the Medal Of Honor.
