The effort to save @hakaimagazine.com is fully underway. So far, we've lined up commitments worth about half of what we need to keep publishing. Ideally, we want one or two more large foundations or donations to give us a solid floor before we throw the doors to reader donations.

I've always put a big emphasis on working with students and new science writers, because I know its a weird, small field that's hard to break into. But I'm blown away by how many people are saying @hakaimagazine was one of the first places that ever gave them a chance

I’m so sorry to hear about @hakaimagazine shuttering. Their reporting is delightful to read, I’ve heard writers rave about working with them and - let’s face it - Canadian journalism needs MORE funding, not less. That said, I look forward to what the Hakai team does next!

I'm obviously devastated. But the team is rallying, and we're hoping to be able to work out _some_ way to continue bringing our award-winning coastal journalism to the world. All options are open right now.
