That was all, that was why the voice knew four syllables, and now would she please let it rest. It held for a day. It came apart on the verandah the next evening, on one word. "She wouldn't go near the water alone," her mother said. "My daughter never—" and then she stopped, and did not start again for a long time. She had been four. The gate came later because of her. The tumbler was the one she drank from, the one her mother had kept and then could not throw away and then could not look at, so it lived at the bottom of a trunk for thirty-one years until something set it on the lip of the well. And the song was not a ghost's song. It was her mother's. She used to stand at the kitchen door at dusk and sing it across the yard to call the child in from the areca trees, the same three lines every evening, in the Tulu her own mother had used. Her mother translated it then, flatly, the way you read out a bill. Come home now. It's late. I have kept your rice. "I sang it that evening too," she said. "Four times. She didn't come." Her daughter sat with the four syllables of her own name in her mouth and understood, finally, what she had been answering. And who had been waiting thirty-one years for someone with that name to finally come to the window.
