Tesla Q3 2023 Earnings Call Notes $TSLA Elon - FSD v12 - significant promise - FSD - potential to make Tesla the most valuable company on earth by far - Energy can become highest margin business - Cybertruck - excited about the vehicle. There will be enormous challenges in ramp and making it cash flow positive. It’s normal. Best product ever. Needs to be at a price that many can afford. - Getting to positive cashflow is the most difficult step - Will take 12-18 months for it to be a significant cashflow positive contributor - Over a million people have reserved the Cybertruck. - Tesla has the best real-world AI team on earth - period (and getting better). NEW CFO - Record quarter for profit in energy - Navigating higher interest and shifting consumer interest - challenging - QoQ decrease in costs in supply chain and logistics - Expanded development in FSD, Cybertruck, DOJO, Bot. R&D will continue to grow - Focus is to make investments through positive cashflow from operations. - Energy leading the charge in profitability - services and other showing promise and continuing momentum - Highlights on interest costs really impacting monthly costs - trying to offset by reducing cost. THere’s an inherent lag in cost reductions. - They boosted lease programs to lower monthly costs Highlight investments in AI and next generation platforms. Positions for the long term. SAY QUESTIONS How many Cybertruck deliveries for 2024? ELON: Ramp will be extremely difficult. Prototypes are easy - production is hard. Nothing to copy - have to invent everything about making the car. It will end up with ~250k cybertrucks per year. Won’t reach that next year - sometime in 2025. Can you provide update on 4680? DREW: texas increase 40% QoQ. Primary facility. Heavily focused on quality. Scrap down 40% QoQ. Cell costs improved month over month, long way to go to steady state. Cybertruck cell with 10% higher density than MY - started production. Phase 2 is under construction. New lines have further efficiency. Production begins late 2024. Kato is retooling - next-generation pilot design. Will be 1 design ahead of the rest of the company. Update on expansion in Berlin, Austin, and Mexico update Berlin and Austin - maximize output on existing lines on efficiency improvements. Mexico - working on infrastructure and factory design. Laying the groundwork to begin construction and doing all long lead items. Getting a sense of the global economy before going full tilt. Elon is worried about the high interest rate environment. Vast majority of people are payment buyers - as rates rise, it becomes tougher to afford. Signals that high interest rates will soften demand. Model Y is tracking on being the best selling car on earth. People want us to advertise, Tesla is advertising somewhat. - there is something to be gained from advertising. If they can’t afford the car the advertising doesn't help. Affordability is the most important thing. Model 3 highland We don’t answer product related questions 2.3 m vehicles in 2024. Is this growth rate achievable? When 50% growth? Lots of moving pieces. Macro economy especially. Focused on growing volumes in a cost efficient manner. Will provide better update in Q4. It’s not possible to have 50% growth forever. Will grow much more rapidly than any other car company on earth by far. Approximate timeline on Robotaxi? Very excited on progress with autonomy. End to end nothing but Nets self driving is amazing (v12). Drives Elon all around austin with no interventions. It’s clearly the right move. Same software approach will enable optimus and do useful things. Will learn simply by looking (the bot). Humanoid robot can break the economy. Tesla is the most ahead. Boston Dynamics is impressive but it lacks a brain (AI). Design it in a way that’s mass manufactured. At some point the robots will manufacture the robots. Need to make sure there’s a good place for humans. Why was the price dropped on FSD if it’s getting better and Robotaxi is here soon? We wanted to make it more affordable so more people can try it. Over time the price of FSD will increase proportionate with its value. Current price is a temporary low. Mercedes is accepting legal liability for level 3 - is Tesla planning to accept legal liability? There’s a lot of people that assume they have liability - Tesla doesn’t. Mercedes system is very limited - Tesla’s is much more holistic. Not very useful. Some people understand the profundity of Tesla AI. It’s basically baby AGI. It has to understand reality in order to drive. Will optimus be working on factory lines in 2024? At this point are not ready to discuss details, but will provide periodic updates online. Could barely walk, now it can do Yoga. A few years from now, it can probably do ballet. Neural net path planning represents significant advancement - what steps is Tesla taking to make this available outside of US? The more places we try to make it work, the harder it is. If we do it simultaneously, makes it hard to make it work anywhere at all. It’s North America at the moment. Need to get approval before doing things - in US, you can deploy things at risk. We don’t want to go thru approval program when it’s not ready for prime time. Apologies for delay, but keep finding ways to make it better. It needs to drive significantly better than a human when it’s unsupervised. Tracking to that point very quickly. In the past overly optimistic - reason is because progress tends to be logarithmic (very fast), but it tails off quickly. Has happened multiple times - stacked log curves. True in other parts of AI (like LLMs) ANALYST QUESTIONS Truck won’t ramp to significant volume until 2025 - similar anticipation for GenIII, or should we be more optimistic about that? It’s more like the 18th month of production. Once it gets to beginning of 2025 it’ll ramp very quickly. Would be very disappointed if it took them 3 years to get to full ramp. 18 months to reach prosperity with an IMMENSE level of effort is achievable. There’s unique complexities to Cybertruck - dug our own grave (model X vibes lol). It’s a really special product - comes along once in a long while. Incredibly difficult to bring to market and reach volume and be prosperous. It’s fundamental to the nature of newness. FOr Gen III, it will be much more conventional. Didn’t have to invent new technologies. Gen III will be cool but it will utilitarian. It will get you from A to B, but it will be super simple. Will be made in volumes never seen before. Cybertruck has a lot of bells and whistles. FSD and pricing - as it improves we should value increase, but the ultimate value is to handle Robotaxi not going to interest everybody. There should be a much lower cost/feature for Robotaxi, and a more expensive one at lower volume. How are you thinking about this and how will you evolve pricing and increase adoption? The economics of an autonomous vehicles are wild - current vehicles get about 10-12 hours week of usage out of 168 hours. Parking, insurance, etc. If you’re able to increase the utility of the car by a factor of 5 (up to ~50 hours of 168 total) but will cost the same. At that point, we are a hard ware company with software margins. GM in the quarter - how much was impacted by idle costs, sequential benefit in Berlin/Austin, Energy GM jump Idle time had an impact (decent impact). Other factories are ramping pretty well - contributed nicely. One of the factories came very close to one of the established factories (Fremont). Energy margins - Megapack deployments really helped. Want to caution that they are a bit lumpy - good jump in Q3, but depending on where it’s being deployed, it will impact the margin differently due to product in transit). ~$2k out of the average vehicle cost in the last couple years. Rate of improvement in the changes - is there a way to convey the speed of improvement from here - and can you share timing of Gen III? There’s lots of things - things we control, and things we don’t. We finished factory upgrades late Q3 - early ramp phase in Q4. Not where we want to be. Ramping Cybertruck will be a negative impact. Uncertainty in macro environment makes it tougher to predict where we’ll land. It’s an evolving thing we are observing every day. Cost reduction, we are unrelenting on the pursuit in 2024 both in engineering and manufacturing. No timing on Gen III product. Price is a driver of demand - hitting a wall potentially. Can you talk about price elasticity? There’s very significant price elasticity. If our car cost the same as a Rav4, no one would buy a Rav4. A lot of the tax credit incentives are very difficult for the average person to access - most people don’t have 7.5k in tax liability. Most people live paycheck to paycheck with a lot of debt. It’s sometimes difficult for high income earners to understand this dynamic. Vast majority of people - how much money do I have to spend up front, and what’s my monthly cost? We are trying to get to “who wants a great car”. Elon real passionate about this. Can’t emphasize enough how important cost is. It’s not optional - it’s necessary. We have to make it more affordable. When look at price reductions in Model Y, and compare it to monthly payment raises, the price of Model Y is almost unchanged. The thing that matters is how much money one can put down, and what is the monthly payment? That number needs to be really low. Thinks there’s still quite a few shoes to drop on the whole credit situation. Credit card debt has been rising. Credit card interest rates are 20%+ interest rates. Cost per vehicle coming down - what are the levers? Scale? Cost utilization? Gigacasting? Radar is included as an option in some Teslas in China Tesla designed radar as an experiment in S/X - that’s it. Will see if that is worth it. Amazing human can drive just fine with eyes - will be FAR safer than the average driver. Computer never gets tired or drunk. In order for Radar to be effective, needs to take actions that are Radar only, otherwise vision and radar conflict. Radar used to generated more noise than signal. Tesla designed radar is high definition, but jury is still out if that’s the case. On cost - always looking to engineer to make cars cheaper, and partnering with partners in the supply chain to lower material costs. It’s not one thing - it’s multiple. There’s a laundry list of things. If you’ve got a $40k car, and have roughly 10k items, on average each item costs $4. It’s a game of pennies. We did factory updates - we expect savings to go up. On flip side, Cybertruck will ramp and will add costs. There’s no brick of gold we can take out. Try to be very rigorous. Not going full tilt on Mexico until signs economy is strong. Can you continue at 50% CAGR without it? We are definitely making the factory, we feel good about it. Feel very good about the location, and will definitely build a factory there and will be great. Question is about timing. Going to be a broken record, but interest rates have to come down. If they keep rising, you will reduce affordability. If we know what the interest rates are, we know when we should build the factory. Will start initial phase next year. Still somewhat scarred by 2009 when GM/Chrysler went bankrupt. Don’t want to go at top speed into uncertainty. Lot of wars going on as well. There’s room in Texas - we can technically do all the scaling in Texas. Not saying things will be bad - they might be. Tesla is an incredibly capable ship, but if the macro is stormy, even the best ship will have tough times. The weaker ships will sink. Even a great ship in a storm will have challenges. It’s not just an auto industry problem - it’s an everyone problem outside of necessary staples. Elon is very much guiding to recession IMO in absence of interest rates going down. I might be more paranoid than I should be due to 2009 and 2017-2018. Auto is also somewhat cyclic. Folks will hesitate to buy a car if there’s uncertainty in the economy. Wars will impact sentiment.
All the SpaceX launches. It’s insane to see the incredible growth and innovation from this company. This is a norm now. x.com/techstock_/sta…
