♦️Happened Today♦️ EFF Nkomazi Caucus tabled a Motion on the insourcing of Security Guards in Nkomazi Local Municipality Council that took place earlier today. In a Motion tabled by EFF Caucus leader Fighter Mafia Fane, the EFF argued the following: - Speaker, outsourcing is one of the greatest instruments of corruption and exploitation against workers. Nkomazi spend millions of rands on tenders while the very workers who protect municipal assets, maintain municipal buildings, clean offices and beautify our public spaces remain trapped in poverty, uncertainty and indignity. - The municipality has turned into a procurement centre whose primary function is to issue tenders instead of creating sustainable employment opportunities. -We are told year after year that outsourcing is cost-effective, efficient and necessary. Yet the lived reality of workers tells a completely different story. - In this very same municipality, more than R60 million is spent annually on outsourced security services. Despite this massive expenditure, security guards continue to earn low wages and face the constant threat of unemployment whenever contracts expire or are awarded to new companies. -This was recently exposed when 247 security guards lost their jobs following the appointment of new security service providers. These are workers who dedicated years of their lives to protecting the municipal property and ensuring the safety of municipal officials and communities. Today, many of them do not know where their next meal will come from, how they will pay rent, or how they will send their children to school. - What makes this matter even more painful speaker is that workers allege that they were never properly consulted in terms of Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act. They were not informed about the possibility of retrenchment, alternatives were not explored, and no fair or transparent criteria were used to determine who would remain employed and who would lose their jobs. Instead, private companies allegedly handpicked workers, deciding the fate of families as though human beings were disposable commodities.
