I actually think we model a fairly dangerous, unrealistic idea of work-life boundaries to students: powering through grief, suffering, pain, crushing fatigue, and in my case, Ive taught immediately after a seizure because I was afraid for my evaluations. No more. Im done.
And, note, Im not saying anyone else should do anything differently. Im trying to teach and be a certain way that accommodates difference, and the ebbs and flows of our bodyminds, faculty and students, and its a constant process. Some semesters are better than others.
@DisabilityStor1 I'm just gobsmacked at this new-ish culture of "the class must go on!" at all costs mentality. When I was an undergrad, it was a fairly normal occurence for class to be cancelled at last minute and only finding out via a printed note on the tute door.
@DisabilityStor1 I tried. And it didn’t matter to my institution. This industry is broken from top to bottom and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
@DisabilityStor1 I love this approach. I’ve been open with my students about the fact my mother died recently and I needed to take leave, and they have responded with compassion.
