@dlc_lance You will be the prey, jungle fool. You know that your enemies love it when you show off in skimpy jungle slut gear. They will put you in their zoo before they are done

@VietSchlong @BretDevereaux So many talented people from a once prolific family snuffed out because of paranoia, ambition, greed, and occasionally real treason. And this was (in my reckoning) a feature not a bug. Political life in the early empire was precarious and often fatal for those who lived it./3

@VietSchlong @BretDevereaux By Nero’s time there don’t seem to be any Julio-Claudians left to support his rule let alone be a possible heir. Britannicus was murdered after years of abuse and his sister Claudia died not long after. The old tradition of familial recruitment for support of the ruler gone/2

@VietSchlong @BretDevereaux But are these late antiquity patricians from the same gens (if that’s the correct term) as earlier late Republican patricians. In terms of the gens Julii and the Claudians too so many were victims of the purges and social unrest that few if any were left/1

@BretDevereaux @VietSchlong Didn’t Augustus single-handedly in his regime’s fitful moments ensure the destruction of most of those elite families, especially his own and his immediate successors did the rest of the work so that by Nero’s time there wasn’t really anyone left from the old Republican families?

“Runner, digger, listener. Prince with a thousand enemies. If they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they have to catch you. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.” From The Myth of El-ahrairah #watershipdown #elahrairah #rabbits

@sungura_mclever @BretDevereaux @dhmontgomery Neither did the Laconophiles in Athens choose to live instead in that city-state they idolized (and on behalf of which, on two occasions, betrayed their own home.) This was especially true of their bloviating mentor, who could have moved there at any time. Interesting…🙄

@WilliamWheelson @TraffordLj @19Averil Oh and Patrick Wyman’s first history podcast, The Fall of Rome, gives a decent overview of the circumstances that led to the “Fall” itself. If you’re not familiar with him he’s the bee’s knees.
