Many soap opera historians and insiders blamed and blame O.J Simpson for the decline of daytime soap operas with the murder trial of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman 30 years ago. Many soap fans left for court and talk shows and never came back.
@DonaldJrPeebles Which is ridiculous. The decline of soaps is due to the poor numbers and women working outside of home led to soaps being canceled and in decline. ABC said new generations of potential viewers were not raised watching soap operas with their mothers which led to poor viewership.
@DonaldJrPeebles It's definitely part of the reason but not only reason
@DonaldJrPeebles Truth be told, daytime soaps didn’t evolve after OJ. All these years later and why do we have the same white and blonde characters all up and through our screens with token minorities here and there?
@DonaldJrPeebles For a little history -- We covered the 25 things daytime soaps did to kill themselves back in 2011 (OJ is not one of them!). -- welovesoaps.net/2011/09/25blun… . OJ was not one of them, but the lack of diversity on and off camera most definitely were.
@DonaldJrPeebles OJ was just a small part of the soap opera decline youtu.be/iv3WW_dJ1OA?si…
@DonaldJrPeebles The beginning of reality tv. I’ll take my soaps back any ole day!
@DonaldJrPeebles Many factors played into it not just this trial, there was cable TV which offered more options, there was women returning to the work place, there was the fact that VCR's and Tivo were never taken into consideration by the ratings system.
