One broken character in a Kindle preview is a search lead, not a one-off fix.
When you find boxed or jumbled text, search the whole manuscript for that character. KDP says to use Kindle Previewer’s search function to locate all instances.
Fix every match, then preview again. If any remain, stop before upload.
Before uploading a paperback, confirm the print edition pays for its own production.
Enter your page count and ink choice in KDP's printing-cost calculator. Use the resulting print cost with the royalty help page to check the minimum list price for that edition.
If that floor conflicts with your intended offer, revise the format or economics before choosing a price.
A paperback proof is optional—not the same as previewing your file.
KDP lets you preview the uploaded manuscript in setup; ordering a physical proof is not mandatory.
Use the digital preview to catch layout issues first. Order a proof only if seeing a printed copy would answer a remaining question.
I was banned from KDP once.
If you get an account notice, save its exact wording, the date, and what changed just before it. Memory makes a poor incident log.
Write that sequence down before deciding your next move.
A paperback can be in draft and still need a production check.
KDP lets you request a proof copy only after approving the book in Print Previewer.
Before ordering, open the final preview and inspect the pages you changed. If the preview is not approved, fix the file first.

Spine text is not a design choice. It is a page-count rule.
KDP says a paperback must have at least 79 pages before you add text on the spine. Below that, do not add it. If the interior you upload is under 79 pages and the cover still has spine text, KDP says the cover is rejected.
Count the pages of the file you will upload, not an earlier draft. Then decide: spine text, or none.
If the book clears 79 pages, keep at least 0.0625 inch (1.6 mm) clear on each side of that text.
Nice to have the next book moving while the first is under review.
Before uploading the dinosaur version, open the actual ebook in Kindle Previewer and check that it reads properly on a phone and a Kindle screen. KDP recommends Previewer for checking ebook quality before publishing.
What changed most between the two files?
An ebook pre-order has a submission deadline, not just a release date.
If your Kindle pre-order is still in Draft with no manuscript uploaded, KDP requires you to submit the final file at least 72 hours before release.
Miss that cutoff and the pre-order is canceled. Put the submission deadline on your production calendar—not only launch day.
KDP Select is a distribution decision, not just a promotion switch.
Before enrolling, check where the Kindle ebook is currently sold. KDP requires that ebook to be exclusive to the Kindle Store during the enrollment period; public libraries are allowed.
If it is still listed elsewhere, resolve that first. Print editions can remain distributed through other channels.
The cited page points to the Kindle quality guide, and that guide is narrower than a checkbox ban.
It says a Kindle book may be rejected or removed when its main purpose is letting the reader write or color on the pages. The listed examples are puzzle books, blank journals, pattern books, coloring books, and facing-page translations.
Before the next Kindle build, mark each prompt: write or color on this page, or answer elsewhere. Keep the first kind out of the Kindle file.
A polished KDP description can still violate a rule through one review quote.
KDP lists reviews, quotes and testimonials among content not to include in a description.
Search the final blurb for quoted praise before saving it.
A paperback cover can look finished and still have the wrong spine.
KDP calculates spine width from page count and paper type. Before upload, compare the exported full wrap—back, spine and front—with the current cover template for that exact edition.
If the panels or trim edges don't line up, stop and regenerate the cover. Don't patch the spine by eye.
A sourced book can still contain a sentence its sources do not support.
For each factual claim, copy the exact passage that carries it into your research notes. Compare the sentence with that passage before the manuscript is final.
If the source does not support the wording, narrow or remove the claim. A bibliography is not a sentence-by-sentence check.
Building an audience is easier to act on when the book has a specific reader problem attached to it.
Before choosing a platform, write one sentence: "This book helps [reader] do [specific thing]." Then compare it with the first page of books Amazon shows for that exact problem. If the promises don't match, refine the positioning before investing in a new channel.
What reader problem is your current book best positioned to solve?
