So six months on, the thing that hurts the most I think is just the extreme u-turn the season took and the betrayal from that. While it was airing, we were all elated. Every corner of the fandom had things they were losing their marbles about. And a lot of it was the same! 🧵
From *literally the opening scene* it felt like we were being seen - you were right. Izzy is important. He deserves love too. He's not a one-dimensional villain. He's a part of this. Everyone on this ship deserves second chances and community and love and support. 🧵
Ed can come back from the depths of depression and not be defined by his abusive behavior. Stede can come back from running away and finally realize he's an equal to the crew and he can be forgiven. Izzy can be forgiven and disentangle from Ed and find himself and happiness. 🧵
Izzy had arguably the most character growth in the season. It truly felt like they were expanding the story beyond the main pair and setting up the ensemble to be led by Izzy in the end to be just as important. Everyone meant something. 🧵
And it was so validating not just in the context of the story but because we spent 18 months being harassed, bullied, and even doxxed. The show seemed to be saying, "You were right. You are valued. They were wrong for not seeing him and wrong for doing that to you." 🧵
The show we loved, loved us back. Everyone deserves a happy ending. Everyone can find love. It's never too late. 🧵
And then in the last ten minutes they killed him. They killed him for a pointless plan and in a way that shouldn't have been deadly in-universe. And they had him apologize and take ownership of Ed's mistakes, actually validating everything the worst people threw at us. 🧵
Just kidding, the show said. He had some nice times but he's ultimately irredeemable. You were wrong. Sorry not sorry for the harassment and the bullying and the doxxing but hey he's in their yard like a dog! He deserved it though and wanted to go so it's fine. 🧵
And that was fucked. They told one story up until the very end and then ripped it out from under us in an ableist, lazy, grotesque way. And I'm not over it and I don't think I'll ever be.
