@esherifftv @lrocket As it turns out, future versions of Raptor will ultimately exceed 700k lb-F! Honing T/W, Isp and reliability are much harder than thrust though. Rocket engines desperately want to explode.

I remember that study, ca 15 years ago. Key essence was “🚀 reusability will never happen” because 1) it is too hard technically, 2) never makes sense financially. As a scientist, I am ok if we are wrong, but only if we learn from being wrong. I think the wrong arguments were:

Argument too hard technically : I think the control problem is really hard but @SpaceX and others solved it. ✅
@SpaceX Technical argument about lifetime limits. I think ppl vastly overestimated the impact on 🚀 mechanical properties during launch. Is there a study dealing w that mistake? Would like to learn more.
@SpaceX I think this point rapidly evolved based on flight data. Sometimes models just are way way too conservative! I have seen that many times. Another example is radiation on COTS part - the Mars helicopter electronics worked much (!!) better than models predicted.
