Nodipecten fragosus is the largest Western Atlantic scallop species whose common name (Lion’s Paw Scallop) is conferred by the rows of large nodules on the surface of the shell. This is an important aquacultural species in some countries.
Florida’s state mollusk, the horse conch, Triplofusus giganteus, feeds on other large snails and grows to two feet, making it the largest snail found in the southeastern seaboard of North America and the second largest snail globally.
Dinocardium robustum, the Giant Atlantic Cockle, is the largest species of cockle in the Western Atlantic, reaching 5 inches. It hasn’t been recorded alive north of Cape Hatteras but a fresh-dead record in Chesapeake Bay on iNaturalist shows that it may live that far north.
This rare, highly prized, King Midas's slit shell, Bayerotrochus midas, a marine gastropod found in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and Bahamas, often on deep vertical walls, collected with Harbor Branch’s Johnson-Sea-Link II submersible at 2,600' off Chub Cay, Bahamas, in 1984.

The Caribbean reef squid, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, is a fascinatine cephalopod found in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, Florida, and Bahamas. These intelligent creatures are members of the squid family, known for their unique characteristics and complex social behaviors
After the original spiraled shell detaches from the tube, the tiny snails in the genus Caecum permanently seal off that end. The aperture closes with an operculum. Pictured: 1. Caecum cooperi, 2. C. floridanum, 3. C. pulchellum, 4. C. heladum, 5. C. textile, and 6. C. strigosum.

An all-time favorite, inch-long Atlantic Kitten Paw, Plicatula gibbosa, is a bivalve commonly found on the beaches of both coasts of Florida. Its common name draws from the shell shape and color pattern.
This genomic work started in @ggiribet's lab, with myself & @brunoasm sequencing all kinds of worms with the @nanopore sequencer. Check out other amazing recent papers: Velvet worm doi.org/10.1093/gbe/ev… led by @invertebrained Penis worm doi.org/10.1093/gbe/ev… led by @Adlord
With the genomes we show that hairworms lack the genetic machinery to make cilia in the first place. The congruent loss in both marine&freshwater lineages further implies that this reduction happened in the deep past, in the ancestor of modern hairworms. 📷 by Giribet & Sørensen
What's crazy about this is that cilia are present across all animals and even more broadly, in protists and some plants and fungi. Scientists knew hairworm sperm lack tails, and there was no conclusive evidence for cilia in other body parts, but it's hard to prove a negative.
We looked at what functions these missing genes are responsible for in other animals, and found they give the instructions for making cilia- organelles related to cell movement and sensory perception. Examples: sperm tails are cilia; cells in the retina of our eyes are ciliated.
We sequenced one species from each environment. Our most surprising finding was that both were missing about 30% of a set of genes that are expected to be present across basically all groups of animals! What's more, most missing genes were exactly the same between species.
Most hairworm species are freshwater/terrestrial (like the one in @brunoasm's hand from a pond in California) But there are also a handful of marine species infecting critters such as squat lobsters (see the juvenile worm recovered from inside the host in Norway by M. Sørensen).
