Yep, I’m that person watching bumble bees mate on a swing-set at a rest stop near Williamsfield, IL. Learned the female bumble bee must extend her stinger in order for mating to occur. Being an entomologist is never boring.
Bees drinking some spilled honey from checking the supers.
Some of the other queen cells in the hive.
It looks like the saskatraz hive swarmed while we were gone.this is the last ‘frame of hope’. Theses bees will hopefully sustain hive until new queen starts laying.
Found a bee foraging the clover in my yard
Baby bee in the hive! Note the fuzziness and light yellow color!
Y’all!!! I just restocked my wine rack and it fell out the wall 😭😭😭😭😭
Requeened one of the hives last week. We found eggs and larva today!
Had to install a new saskatraz queen today! Hope they like her!
Thanks for the bees @SVHoneyfarms !
A few other pics from the day
Bee install day! One box of Italians and one box of saskatraz.
Bee pick up day is sched for tomorrow! Should have 2 hives installed by 4!
2 dead out hives = 75 lbs of honey!
With 2 dead hives, I now have a lot of extra honey to harvest. I’ll keep a couple frames for the new boxes in spring.
The Saskatraz were dead but still on the frames. We found remnants of the cluster and the Queen in the frames, but most bees on bottom board .
Confirmed both hives died. Saskatraz appeared to not have had good enough numbers and froze. The Italians most like got ‘wet’ from lack of ventilation and died from freezing as well.
Hoping to check hives this weekend! Had to dig a path so the sun could help us have a cleaner work area.
