I believe in being clear about what I stand at a time when it's fashionable to DEBUNK people & ideas w/no research basis I stand beside: • Reading Recovery • Marie Clay • Lucy Calkins • Fountas & Pinnell • Balanced literacy And much more Attack away but I ignore bullies
@DrMaryHoward I’ve been around long enough to watch the pendulum swing back and forth regarding how to teach reading- 37 years! I have learned anecdotally that children are not all the same and that we need to use a variety of approaches to help each student reach their potential.
@ESLteachLynn @DrMaryHoward An excuse to teach only compensatory behaviors used by struggling & novice readers & writers - pics, 1st & last letters, context & discovery - w/ only sit attn to language principles for S who don’t naturally map (most). The pedagogy & curricula above harm most S & T. Malpractice
@ESLteachLynn @DrMaryHoward I’ve seen the pendulum as well! When I was teaching with the whole language (I know, bad words these days), the children learned phonics, learned fluency, learned comprehension, learned self check skills……and the joy of reading!!! I don’t see that joy these days….
@ESLteachLynn @DrMaryHoward How would you teach a dyslexic student and why isn't their access included in tier 1.
