More discussion is needed about how the digital code dictates what we see and delivers a "homogenous experience". I think there is little awareness about this. #Lesson13

Social media can be used as a tool for counteracting top-down communication models. It is important to have discourse. Gives people a voice. #Lesson12

Individuals are targets of communication. Feel this more and more every day. #Lesson12

@EmilyGagliano1 I don't think we would be aware of half of the issues if not for social media. Mainstream media is so quick to move on to the next story.

@c_nkor yes, helpful for reinforcing the course info.

I find the twitter component of this course to be very effective and engaging. That it is for a small percentage of marks ensures participation. Far more interaction than in real life. And time to think and reflect. #educ307

@AlexandreO0071 I know. But it's a show of respect.

If you absolutely need it... I like the idea of turning your phone over, screen down, and sound off when having a conversation with someone. #Lesson4

Well, I was not expecting to be learning about the Black Metal Scene in this course. I had no idea there was such a big audience for this. #nicheonlinegroup #Lesson13

Organizations use top-down models of communication because they want to control the conversation. They want to be in charge of what is discussed and where the attention goes. #Lesson12

@chfaizan2812 @nicolevam3 Yes, should be part of the curriculum.

@Carinaamante8 Yes, and without social media, I think there would have been a lot more mental health repercussions due to isolation.

@SafaAnweer I think awareness campaigns would be useful also. Seems like a pretty major issue!

@brandon35b Yes, seems that way. Are we looking for a connection then? It feels good when someone has thought of us.. The endless scrolling is is escape from boredom, procrastination.. Awareness is the key to change, if that's what we want.

We have talked about how social media and devices are distracting but really, I find myself seeking the distraction. Why am I doing that? Boredom, procrastination..? What about you? What do you think? #educ307

@CelineEduc307 Aboslutely. These online classes work well for me. Far less distractions and I can do it on my own schedule.

Will the social media discourse and alternative viewpoints ever come to a point of civilized understanding and potentially have the ability to unify citizens on some fundamental aspects of society? #weness #optimist #educ307

The ability to video and share globally protests in real time has shifted the storytelling role to the participants and enables an international audience to access information on their own time. #Lesson12

@n_stassinos307 Admittedly not very long. And realizing that makes me uncomfortable. To be so dependent on an object is concerning.

The chapter by Adam Klein lays out an incredible account of the development of social media as a voice for the people during uprisings. Raw footage of protests and reactions of government have given accountability to the people as the storytellers. #Lesson12

Of course we are influenced by Disney. They own so much of the media market. The are part of the story of our world, here in North America, in particular. They have a lot power. #Lesson11

I appreciate Janet Crawford's conclusion in her TEDx talk that suggests that with awareness and discussion by all, overcoming gender biases is possible. #Lesson11
