Q6 #MGBookChat! In my experience, middle school is filled with hurtful & uncomfortable language. From curse words to racism & other sensitive topics. Since more of this language is being used by #students, do you think these topics should be more seen in #MGLit?
@ETrainsWorld Y’all. Can we give @ETrainsWorld his props? He really prepared for this and it shows. E, you’re always expert and these are great questions too. #MGBookChat
@ETrainsWorld A6: Based on my reads, LATE #MGLit IS including some uncomfortable topics that tend to include uncomfortable language, but typically with a value judgement about those things baked in (at least in a lot of the recent publications I've seen). #MGBookChat
@ETrainsWorld Q6 #MGBookChat Those topics certainly should be covered. It's good for young people to engage with & think deep issues through. But that doesn't nec need bullying or racist language; it should be handled sensitively, if used. Trees in the Pavements (@JenniferAGLayte) did it well.
@ETrainsWorld A6 #MGBookChat Words are not bad or negative. The way people USE them creates the negative connotations & hurtful situations. The earlier we learn how we use our words wisely, the better. #MGLit can be the source of education that makes a real difference in young readers lives.
