@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. Devotees pray to him for wisdom, protection and freedom from suffering. Yet, in a painful contradiction, the very animal whose form is central to his divinity continues to suffer in the name of religious devotion. Elephants are intelligent, sentient, socially complex wild animals who deserve to live with dignity, freedom and the opportunity to express their natural behaviours. Yet many captive elephants endure chains, confinement, separation from their natural social groups and the demands of religious ceremonies. Their physical and psychological needs are too often subordinated to human beliefs, traditions and expectations. What is the meaning of worshipping a deity in the form of an elephant while denying freedom to a living elephant? Tradition cannot be a justification for suffering, and devotion should never come at the cost of another being's welfare. If we seek wisdom from Ganesha, we must have the wisdom to question practices that cause harm. If we seek protection through prayer, we must be willing to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. Elephants do not need to be chained to prove our devotion. Their presence in religious ceremonies is not necessary to honour the divine. We can preserve our faith and cultural heritage through compassionate alternatives that do not exploit living animals. The true measure of our devotion lies not in how beautifully we worship an elephant-headed God, but in how compassionately we treat the living elephants who share our world. Let us not worship the image of freedom while denying freedom to the elephant. Let us honour Ganesha by ending elephant suffering, protecting their welfare and allowing them to live as wild animals—not as instruments of human tradition. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

When will the judiciary unequivocally recognise that elephants are wild animals, not property to be possessed by temples or private individuals? Under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, elephants are protected under Schedule I, and their possession, acquisition and transfer are subject to statutory restrictions and regulatory permissions. Article 48A and Article 51A(g) of the Constitution also reinforce the State’s duty to protect wildlife and every citizen’s responsibility to show compassion for living creatures. While Indian law continues to permit certain forms of regulated captive-elephant possession, should legal permission alone be enough to justify a wild animal’s lifelong confinement for religious, cultural or commercial purposes? Will the courts move beyond regulating captivity and seriously examine whether it should continue at all? Elephants are sentient, free-ranging wild animals whose ecological role and welfare cannot be reduced to human ownership or religious utility. The question is not whether traditions deserve respect, but whether traditions must evolve when they conflict with wildlife protection, animal welfare and compassion. When will the law place an elephant’s freedom and welfare above the human claim to possess it? #livelaw #supremecourt #madrashighcourt #captiveelephants

Today, on the auspicious occasion of Ayudha Pooja, people worship the tools, instruments and machines that support their professions and livelihoods. But what does it mean when the tools used to control and inflict suffering on captive elephants are also placed in the name of devotion? Bullhooks (ankush), sticks, spiked chains, ropes, knives and other restraining devices used to control, intimidate and subjugate these sentient beings are among the tools associated with elephant captivity. Is it not a contradiction to worship the tools of our livelihood while overlooking the suffering they inflict on another life? Can devotion truly have meaning when the instruments of control and cruelty are revered, while the lives subjected to them are denied freedom and dignity? Dear Chief Minister Vijay, you are entrusted with the responsibility of governing our state with compassion, justice and equality. Under your leadership, please do not allow this age-old practice of elephant enslavement to continue indefinitely in the name of tradition. Your government’s guiding principle, “Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum” — all lives are equal by birth — must extend beyond words and become a reality for every living being. True devotion is not merely about worshipping the tools we use; it is about questioning whether our actions cause suffering to others. True leadership is not just about preserving traditions, but having the courage to reform those that deny freedom and dignity to other lives. Let this Ayudha Pooja be an opportunity to reflect, reform and choose compassion over cruelty. Let us worship our tools without glorifying the suffering they cause. Let us build a society where every life is treated with respect, dignity and compassion. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

There was a time when humans were enslaved, traded, abused, imprisoned, and killed for the benefit of others. Over time, we evolved to recognize that human slavery was unethical and morally wrong, learning to value every human life with dignity and equality. Yet, this moral evolution remains incomplete. Elephants continue to be enslaved, traded, and abused in the name of tradition, culture, and human interests. We abolished slavery for our own species, but we continue to justify it for other living beings. Perhaps the human desire to dominate and control other lives has not disappeared; it has simply drawn a boundary around our own species. We have freed ourselves from the chains of slavery while leaving elephants bound by ours. True moral progress begins when we recognize that the value of a life does not depend on its species. Respect, dignity, and freedom should not be privileges reserved for humans, but principles extended to all sentient beings. #CaptiveElephantWelfare #NoElephantsinTemple #StopElephantCaptivity #ElephantRehabilitation

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept @AadhavArjuna #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Namashivaya Deserves More Than a Sacred Name — He Deserves Freedom Renaming a captive elephant Namashivaya is a moment that calls for deeper reflection. The name itself carries a profound spiritual meaning: “I bow to Lord Shiva.” But what does this sacred mantra mean if the elephant who bears the name continues to live in confinement, deprived of the freedom to live according to his natural instincts? Lord Shiva is associated with Nandi, the bull, and is often depicted amidst the wilderness, symbolising a profound connection with nature. The mantra Om Namah Shivaya invites humility, reverence, and the surrender of human ego before the divine. Should this reverence not extend to the living beings who share this Earth with us? An elephant is not a religious object, a symbol to be possessed, or an instrument for fulfilling human traditions. He is a sentient being with his own needs, emotions, social bonds, and natural instincts. He deserves the opportunity to walk freely, forage, explore, socialise with other elephants, and experience life beyond the restrictions imposed by humans. If we truly bow to Shiva, should we not also bow to the dignity of the life that exists beyond our control? Religious beliefs and traditions may hold deep meaning for people, but they should also inspire compassion and responsibility. The sacredness of an elephant's name cannot compensate for the deprivation of his freedom. Nor should the honour bestowed upon him become a reason to overlook his individual welfare. Perhaps the most meaningful way to honour Namashivaya is not merely to give him a sacred name, but to give that name a living expression through compassion. Let his name remind us that devotion is not measured by how closely we bring animals into our religious lives, but by how respectfully we allow them to live their own. If Namashivaya is named in honour of Shiva, let us honour that name by working towards a life that respects his natural needs, dignity, and freedom. Om Namah Shivaya. Let this be more than a mantra on human lips. Let it become a reminder to protect the lives with whom we share this world. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Dear Elon Musk @elonmusk, While you are trying to bring Starlink to India, I would like to ask you to consider an opportunity that could make you a true champion of animal welfare in the country. Mukesh Ambani’s Vantara has established a facility that reportedly cares for around 250 elephants. This is a significant initiative, but India has a much larger elephant welfare crisis that needs urgent attention. Thousands of elephants continue to live in captivity in India, many kept by private owners, temples and other institutions. These highly intelligent, social and sentient beings are taken away from their natural lives and confined to human purposes. Many endure chains, restricted movement, isolation, demanding work and harsh training practices. Even when their basic needs are met, captivity can deny them the freedom to make their own choices, form natural social bonds and live as elephants were meant to live. Elon, if you are looking for a way to make a lasting difference in India beyond technology, consider helping establish a nationwide elephant rescue and rehabilitation initiative. With your resources and technological expertise, you could help rescue elephants from abusive conditions, create spacious natural habitats, support expert veterinary care, reunite compatible elephants and provide lifelong sanctuary where release into the wild is not possible. India has more than 1,500 captive elephants in private custody, according to reported government figures. Imagine the difference a dedicated initiative could make to these animals. You may face commercial and regulatory hurdles in the Indian telecommunications market, but you have another opportunity to win the hearts of millions of Indians—not through competition, but through compassion. If you genuinely commit to the welfare and rehabilitation of captive elephants, animal lovers across India and around the world would welcome and support such an initiative. We would also be willing to advocate for fair consideration of Starlink by the Indian government, while recognising that telecommunications licensing must be decided independently on its merits. You have the opportunity to connect the world through Starlink. You could also help reconnect captive elephants with the natural lives they have been denied. Please consider making elephant freedom and welfare another part of your legacy. With hope and respect, A voice for India's captive elephants 🐘 @PFCII @elephantsjp

Elephants are wild animals, shaped by evolution to fulfil a vital role in nature. They are ecosystem engineers, helping regenerate forests, disperse seeds, and sustain the delicate balance that countless other species depend on. Elephants were never meant to exist for human purposes; they belong to the wild, where they evolved to live freely. The fact that our ancestors learned to capture, control, and exploit them for their own needs does not mean elephants were created to serve us. Today, technology has advanced to a point where machines can perform many tasks that once depended on animal labour. There is no ethical justification for continuing to confine these magnificent, sentient beings for human convenience, tradition, or entertainment. It is time to evolve beyond the mindset of ownership and domination, and embrace a future rooted in compassion, respect, and freedom. Elephants deserve to live as nature intended—not as captives of human civilisation, but as free beings in the forests they call home. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Tradition alone cannot justify the ongoing use of elephants. While trained elephants hold deep historical significance in India, historical continuity does not validate indefinite dependence on the practice. Elephants should not be subjected to avoidable physical and psychological suffering simply because they have been trained to serve human ends. They are not merely resources to be managed, but living beings deserving of respect. #ElephantRehabilitation #CaptiveElephantWelfare #StopElephantCaptivity

Temple Employees’ Welfare Is Welcome. But What About Temple Elephants? It is heartening to see the Tamil Nadu Government taking swift action to safeguard the welfare of temple employees. Their rights and well-being deserve attention and protection. But we must ask the government: When will the welfare of temple elephants receive the same priority? Despite 53 organisations submitting a representation raising concerns about the welfare of the newly acquired elephant calves brought from Assam, the government has remained silent. Why have these concerns not been addressed? What steps has the government taken to assess their welfare and ensure that their best interests are protected? Elephants are sentient beings capable of experiencing physical pain, stress and emotional distress. They cannot speak for themselves, but that does not make their suffering any less important. Will the Hon’ble Chief Minister and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department respond to the concerns raised by these 53 organisations? Will the government provide transparency on the circumstances of these transfers and the measures being taken to safeguard the calves’ physical and psychological well-being? Protecting the welfare of temple employees is commendable. But compassion and good governance must extend to all sentient beings under the government’s care. Temple elephants deserve attention, protection and justice too. Why is their welfare being neglected? @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnhrcedept @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk

Human–Elephant Conflict: Must Elephants Suffer for Human Safety? Is it ethical to capture a wild elephant, take away its freedom, train it under human control and use it to confront its own kind in the name of mitigating human–elephant conflict? In India, captive elephants known as kumkis are used in certain forest operations to drive wild elephants away from human settlements. However, we must not overlook the suffering this practice can inflict on captive elephants. Elephants are highly intelligent, social animals with strong family bonds and complex behavioural needs. Capture and captivity can disrupt their social relationships, restrict their freedom and cause stress. When forced into confrontations with wild elephants, they risk fear, exhaustion and physical injury. Wild elephants, too, may experience distress and displacement, often without the underlying causes of conflict being addressed. Should elephants suffer because humans have failed to find better ways to coexist with wildlife? Prioritise humane alternatives Governments must focus on protecting elephant habitats and restoring wildlife corridors, strengthening early-warning systems, deploying trained rapid-response teams and implementing locally appropriate crop-protection measures. Timely compensation, community participation and science-based conflict management are equally essential. Rather than repeatedly driving elephants away, authorities must address the reasons they enter human settlements and adopt solutions suited to local conditions. Establish conflict mitigation committees Dedicated committees should bring together local residents and farmers, local administration, central authorities, forest officials, elephant behaviourists, wildlife veterinarians and NGOs with proven research and field experience. These committees should recommend humane solutions, monitor outcomes and ensure transparent, accountable decision-making. Demand accountability Forest departments and government authorities must justify the use of captive elephants through documented assessments of necessity, effectiveness and animal welfare. Independent veterinary oversight, transparent reporting and investigations into cruelty or neglect must be ensured. Governments must also be held accountable for investing in preventive measures rather than relying on methods that may expose elephants to avoidable suffering. Conservation must not come at the cost of suffering A captive elephant is not a machine, and a wild elephant is not an enemy. Both deserve protection and consideration. True conservation is not about making elephants fight one another on our behalf. It is about addressing the causes of conflict, protecting human lives and livelihoods, and finding humane ways for people and elephants to coexist. We must demand better alternatives, transparent decisions and enforceable accountability. The success of conservation should be measured not simply by how quickly conflict is controlled, but by how effectively we protect both people and elephants while minimising suffering. @moefcc @animalwelfareb1 @IndiaIucn @WWFINDIA @tnforestdept @wti_org_india #projectelephant #captiveelephantwellfare #stopelephantcaptivity #kumkielephant #humanelephantconflict #elephantrehabilitation

Tamil Nadu Government’s Silence on Assam Elephant Transfers Is Deeply Concerning The transfer of five elephants — Durga, Rupsing, Shiva, Hiralal and Bijuli — from Assam to Tamil Nadu has raised serious concerns about the legality of the transfers, the authenticity of ownership records and the welfare of the animals. On October 1, 2026, a coalition of 53 animal welfare, wildlife and conservation organisations submitted a joint representation to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and relevant authorities, seeking an independent investigation into these transfers. Despite the seriousness of the concerns raised, the absence of a clear public response from the Tamil Nadu government is worrying. When 53 organisations raise questions about potential violations of wildlife protection laws, the government has a responsibility to respond with transparency and accountability. Several critical questions remain unanswered. Were the elephants legally acquired? Are their ownership certificates, ages and origins properly documented? Were all necessary permissions obtained? Were the transfers genuinely donations, and did they comply with the applicable provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and other relevant rules? These questions must be investigated impartially. The allegations should neither be dismissed without examination nor treated as proven before the evidence is assessed. Beyond legality, the welfare of these elephants demands urgent attention. Elephants are highly intelligent, social animals whose physical and psychological needs extend far beyond food and shelter. Their health, origins, transport conditions, social bonds and present living environments must be independently evaluated. Cultural and religious practices deserve respect, but they cannot replace legal compliance or justify neglecting animal welfare. The Tamil Nadu government must acknowledge the representation and take concrete action by: - Initiating an independent investigation into the five elephants' acquisition and transfer records. - Making relevant ownership documents and statutory permissions available for scrutiny. - Conducting independent veterinary and welfare assessments. - Ensuring that any further transfers are considered only after legal compliance has been verified. - Publishing its findings and taking appropriate action wherever violations are established. Silence is not a substitute for accountability. The absence of a public explanation leaves legitimate concerns unresolved and weakens confidence in the enforcement of wildlife protection laws. The issue is not merely about moving elephants between states. It is about ensuring that protected wildlife is not transferred without proper scrutiny and that the law applies equally to every individual and institution. We urge the Tamil Nadu government to break its silence, respond formally to the concerns raised by the 53 organisations and ensure a transparent, independent investigation without further delay. These elephants cannot speak for themselves. Their welfare and legal protection must not be compromised by administrative silence or institutional interests. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept @Ahmedshabbir20 @THChennai #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation
