Oakland is having the 11th best downtown recovery in America, while San Francisco is next to last. Why the huge difference between the two neighboring cities?

@Elmanogonsalves Simple answer: Housing! Oakland, starting with Jerry Brown's administration, was smart to focus on building a lot of housing downtown, which helps provide a floor for economic activity. SF downtown is just commercial buildings - very little residential.
@Elmanogonsalves My wife and I moved from the Bay Area in 1990 (price of housing). Growing up in Hayward, I knew Oakland pretty well. About ten years ago we drove through downtown Oakland on a weekend. I couldn’t believe all the activity! In my youth it had been nearly a ghost town on weekdays.
@Elmanogonsalves SF is actually last. Whoever made the graph listed San Antonio twice.
@Elmanogonsalves Oakland has been building lots of housing downtown, it’s easy to drive downtown and downtown Oakland has less open-air drug abuse and mental health crises than SF’s FiDi/SoMa.
@Elmanogonsalves OMG, please. This is garbage. Gaslighting just further destroys Oakland.
