EltaCrew @EltaCrew

@drkpxl_ Nice writeup. If anyone here uses a phone as the remote: LG's local control goes over the SSAP websocket on port 3000/3001, so after stripping services it's worth checking that pairing still works before the IR remote goes missing.

@berteotti_ Nice. Tip for the Samsung side: save the token the TV sends back after the first Allow prompt and pass it when you reconnect on wss :8002, otherwise the TV asks for permission again every time.

@humzaakhalid One thing to keep if you debloat that way: com.google.android.tv.remote.service. Disabling it breaks pairing with the Google TV phone remote, which is a pain if the physical remote goes missing.

@MutaleGeorge @AMChonganya Depends on the TV brand: Samsung uses SmartThings, LG uses LG ThinQ, and Android/Google TVs work with the Google TV app. All have a free remote over the same Wi-Fi.

@lastoneiswear10 Ha, true. A lot of the "Samsung remote" apps just put the brand in the title. SmartThings is the one Samsung actually makes.

@Toy__Truck If it's a smart TV, the maker's free app (SmartThings, LG ThinQ or Google TV) can work as the remote over the same Wi-Fi until it turns up.

@anthonysurfermx @joseraul_79 Sí, es gratis (con anuncios). En Google Play la encuentras como «TV Remote Control» de EltaCrew.

@Chandan_blaster @raza_shehryar Not OP, but I run one on Android. Most installs come from Play search and it runs on small native ads. Testers have asked for a cheap one-time ad-free unlock rather than a subscription.

@_DeeJayXXIV Fair, a phone never quite feels like a real remote. If you get a replacement, Samsung's own remote pairs fast: point it at the TV and hold Back + Play/Pause for about 3 seconds.

@JeiBae1 Mostly smash Agree, but on LG it's worth a look: the viewing-information and interest-based ad agreements are usually optional, so you can leave those unchecked and the TV still works. Only the main terms are required.

@vikasjkn @StevenMatison From running one: in our data, people who delete the app are mostly the ones who never got connected. So a guided "can't find my TV" screen (same Wi-Fi, not a guest network, TV network standby on) might beat new features.

@elviric Nice, auto-reconnect is the part most remote apps get wrong. When you add more TVs, keying each saved TV by a stable ID instead of its IP helps, since the IP can change after a router restart.

@fermex95 Nice write-up. One package worth keeping if you ever use a phone as the remote: Android TV Remote Service (com.google.android.tv.remote.service). It handles the pairing code for phone remote apps, so removing it breaks them.

@HusseinTheDev Most smart TVs have one now: LG ThinQ, Samsung SmartThings, Google TV. Phone and TV just need to be on the same Wi-Fi, then you pair once with a code on the TV screen.

@pohstep_x027 Nice one. Idea for the remote: map the Mac's media keys (volume up/down, mute) straight to the TV so you don't need the shortcut for those. For the launcher, an input tile that remembers the last HDMI source would be handy.
