Good evening, Twitter! I’m spending my Friday night in the affluent Bay Area suburb of Millbrae, where the county is presenting a plan to turn a hotel into ~100 homes for unhoused residents. It appears that the entire city is here, and they are *pissed*. 🧵

Today is the 103rd anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Remember—it only gave white women voting rights. BIPOC women waited decades more: •1920: White Women •1952: Asian Women •1962: Native Women •1965: Black Women •1975: Latino Women We must continue to protect voting rights

Learning as an adult that the Red Cross is the absolute LAST organization you want involved when people are in crisis was quite a blow. This is the story with them every single time. If you want to donate, find a LOCAL organization that is on the ground.

These assertions are not true. Most studies show **no effect for 50 years.** Now, some pro-police criminologists disagree (based on a few of their studies that don’t count police crimes and use proprietary data). But it’s controversial! Calling it “well established” is untrue.

The truth is that the linkage between police staffing levels and crime is very well established in general, and we have strong good from the past of broad dynamic that German is pointing to of the misconduct —> protest —> depolicing —> crime cycle.

The NYPD let Brownsville residents respond to 911 calls for 5 days. One volunteer "persuaded a man going into a bodega with a gun to give him his weapon and go home." From @NYTimesCramer nytimes.com/2023/06/04/nyr…

NE State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh (D-Omaha) prepares to filibuster every bill on the legislative agenda unless Republicans pull their anti-trans bill. "If people are like, 'Is she threatening us?,' let me clear: Yes, I am. I am threatening you."

A man named Jordan Neely was choked to death in public on the subway this week while people watched and even cheered. This is horrific. The constant demonization of poor people and people in mental health crisis in our city allows for this barbarism. It is making our city sick.

A lot of eyes have been on Tennessee this week, but I want to remind New Yorkers that our Democratic Governor is trying to destroy successful bail reforms for no other reason than unjustly incarcerating more people. All the data is against her. The legislature is against her.

If you care about kids, what's happening in LA should shock you. LA County probation cops have assaulted, raped, and pepper sprayed youth for 30 years. Politicians know about it but haven't stopped it. That might change this week. Here's what you should know.

Conservatives talking about arming teachers when they won’t pay teachers enough, won’t give teachers supplies, and more and more won’t even let teachers teach is a sick example of how violence is the solution to every problem while the underlying issues are made worse and worse.

All these headlines about a trans shooter when almost every other mass shooting is committed by cisgender men. There's a story about shootings and gender, but you're not writing it.
