I want to confirm, this has been a thread entirely dedicated to the doors of #Florence. There were many more, I couldn't stop to take all the pictures. But Florence is an open-air museum, I could write a lot more threads about the many other fascinating aspects of this city.

Okay, this is a thread about the magnificent doors of #Florence in #Italy. When I am travelling, I stop to look at the doors of buildings. I have seen beautiful ones in many places. But never like this. These doors need to be appreciated.

The Fawazeer program which came on in the 60s started going downhill in the late 90s, methinks?Then stopped altogether in early 2000s. Attempts to revive them have not really been a success, possibly because no one will be sending answers over post mail in this day and age

With everyone watching the same thing, everyone also had something to connect over. There wasn't that massive gulf in cultural references that exists between classes today. It was a family show that everyone watched & it was an Egyptian media product that worked - until it didn't

But there was more to fawazeer than songs & dance. It was a very effective way to get people to watch ads during Ramadan primetime hours, & watch they did 👀 I was told that if you peeped your head out the window when fawazeer came on, you'd hear the music coming from everywhere

Despite countless jump cuts & bad attempts at animation, Fatoota remains in people's memory. Every year a big star was picked to present the riddles. Everyone brought something different. My favorite is the wonderful Nelly, whose showmanship was unbeatable youtu.be/u0yOQRvnU0g

The effort put into making the intro & outro every year was massive. So much creativity was poured into developing the sets, the costumes and music. Fatoota in his trademark green outfit was played by late actor Samir Ghanem. Here he is in action! youtu.be/JF7hPvQXdnk

The word fawazeer itself is the plural of the Egyptian word for riddle. The show presented a riddle every episode, people had to figure out the answer. At the end of Ramadan, people compiled and mailed in all the 29/30 answers to compete for a prize. Why was it special though?

Fatoota's debut appearance on Egypt television was in the early 80s. This was over 40 years ago, but the character remains one of the images synonymous with the start of Ramadan. That goes to show how influential the fawazeer program was in shaping culture. So what are fawazeer?

I never have and never will take it for granted that I get to casually drive past the Giza #Pyramids whenever I want to. Khufu is so, so grand. I don't even have the words to describe how massive the pyramid is. Standing next to it really makes a person realize their true size.
