Looking at all the times the S&P 500 finished red during a midterm year showed the next year was higher the past 8 times. Not to mention a very impressive 24.6% average gain that next year.

The Dow is up 10.8% for the month, which would be the best October since Charlie Dow created the Dow in 1896. The other Octobers to gain 10%? 1982 and 2002. Both ended bear markets and stocks had huge multi-year gains next.

Noted this at the start of the month, but when stocks are down in August, they are really down. No month has a worse avg. when it is lower than August. S&P 500 down 4.2% this August fits right in unfortunately.

The S&P 500 had a 21 month bear market that saw stocks lose 27% from Nov 1980 to Aug 1982. Once it became clear that inflation was rolling over, it took less than 4 months to get back to new highs.

Bear markets (and near bears) that take place without a recession avg 23.8% and last more than seven months. The current bear was 23.6% and more than five months long. Pretty normal as crazy as that sounds and feels.
