KC Concepcion stands in front of the cameras after every single Cleveland Browns game. He does it on purpose, and he has a stutter. Here is what he says about why. "I want to be a role model for those who are not able to speak in front of large crowds." Understand what that costs him. It started when he was small and playing quarterback. He could not get the play out of his mouth in the huddle, and the other kids would stand there and go hurry up, hurry, just say it. At school it got worse. Here is what he wrote about the way classmates talked to him. "Why can't you talk normal? Are you dumb or something?" And here is how he describes the difference. "Not with me, or even about me. At me." The school put him in speech classes. Breathing exercises, pronunciation drills. "Nothing seemed to be working." Then one year ended and the thing just left. Over a summer it was gone, completely. School started again and it came back. "It's been with me ever since." No teacher stepped in. Nobody at that school helped him with any of it, and he did not know one single person like him to look at and copy. He had his mother. She told him to keep his chin up and that there was nothing wrong with him. And he had football, where nobody cared how he talked. He was born in Rochester, New York, and the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina when he was three. He went to Julius L. Chambers High School there. Two years at NC State. Then a year at Texas A&M, where he caught 61 passes for 919 yards and nine touchdowns and ran two punts back for scores. Cleveland took him in the first round of the draft in April, 24th overall. And at the scouting combine before that, grown adults on the internet made fun of the way he talked. Here is what he said back. "I cannot control this." He laid all of that out himself, in a letter he wrote to NFL general managers before the draft, published in The Players' Tribune. Here is the line he ended it on. "Whatever makes you different, that is not the thing holding you back." Now the part that complicates it. He is a first round pick with a guaranteed contract and a platform most people never get near, and plenty of kids who stutter will never have either. Standing at a podium is not the same as being eleven years old in a classroom. But he is the one who was eleven in that classroom. And the kid who could not find a single person like himself to look up to decided the fix for that was to go stand in the light every week, on purpose, and let everybody hear him.

Today was opening day for the American Made store they just built across the street from our development. I stopped in and it does only sell products made in America. Lots of candy, building supplies, storage buildings, household items, and a great ice cream bar (they were giving out free cups of ice cream, I had the black walnut). They also sell farm fresh eggs, whole milk from an Amish dairy, cheeses, and lots of canned products from Amish supplies. Prices were normal and not exhorbitant. It's a hit. This is in Duenweg, Missouri.

In 2005, Oneida shut the flatware factory in Sherrill, New York. A town that had made silverware for MORE THAN 100 YEARS was supposed to be finished. Two men refused to let that happen. Their names are Matt Roberts and Greg Owens. Roberts had managed that factory. Owens was another former Oneida manufacturing manager. When the company ended U.S. production, they bought the plant and the equipment and reopened it the NEXT DAY as Sherrill Manufacturing. They did not have a giant rescue fund. They did not have a Hollywood ending waiting. They had a building, some machines, and a workforce that knew how to make forks, knives, and spoons. At first they kept making product for Oneida. Then Oneida pulled the remaining American work and sent it overseas. That should have been the end. It wasn’t. They took government flatware contracts to keep the lights on. In 2010 they filed Chapter 11. They sold unused equipment. They sold space they could no longer fill. They leased back only the part of the factory they could still run. They came out of bankruptcy in 2013. Then they did the thing that saved the company. They built their own brand: Liberty Tabletop. They sold 18/10 stainless flatware straight to customers who wanted tableware MADE IN THE UNITED STATES. Not through a department store that could drop them overnight. Direct. Today Liberty Tabletop is the only company still manufacturing stainless steel flatware in America. Same town. Same trade. U.S. steel. About 70 jobs. They did not bring back 2,000 workers. Nobody did. What they saved was the last line. If you want American-made forks and spoons, this is the factory that still makes them. Support Liberty Tabletop. URGENT SENIOR IN BARROW COUNTY, GA‼️ This is my second time posting Apollo, and unfortunately, the shelter is starting to take a toll on him‼️💔💔He’s pacing more in his kennel and just doesn’t seem as happy as he was when I first met him. 💔I really love Apollo. He’s what I call my gentle giant. He’s 8 years old, walks perfectly on leash, and truly just wants to be loved. When I take him out, he’s happiest standing beside me while I sit there and pet him.💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏 Then I have to put him back, and that part is getting harder.💔 Apollo spent eight years as someone’s dog before being surrendered following an incident that was described as protective rather than aggressive.👍 I also spoke with his owner’s girlfriend, who told me he previously lived with dogs and cats and did well with them, although that is not included in his official shelter notes. The boyfriend’s dad did not like Apollo from the beginning and was trying to get him out.😭 Reality is the shelter is FULL, and Apollo is showing us that he’s struggling.‼️He’s a senior who just wants someone beside him. Chris Johnson cannot speak anymore. He cannot walk on his own either. He talks through a device he controls with his eyes. His day starts with two hours of stretching. Seven bottles of medication. Physical therapy four or five times a week. A machine that bypasses his lungs and pumps every four seconds, all day, all night. His wife Brittany does almost all of it herself. "The hardest part is watching little pieces of him be torn away." He is 40 years old. In 2009 he ran for 2,006 yards, the sixth man in NFL history to do it. ALS was diagnosed in May 2025. He kept it private for more than a year. Then last Fourth of July weekend, about a week after he finally said it out loud on Good Morning America, he did something nobody expected a man in his condition to do. He started a challenge. He called it the CJ2K Ice Bucket Challenge, dumped the water on himself, and called out his old teammates. LenDale White went first. Then Pacman Jones. Then Marshawn Lynch. Then it got away from him in the best possible way. Vince Young. Adrian Peterson. Deion Sanders. Emmitt Smith. Thurman Thomas. LeSean McCoy. Pat McAfee. The entire Football Night in America crew did it live on NBC. Mike Tomlin wore a shirt for him on air during his broadcasting debut at the Hall of Fame Game. And his daughter challenged LeBron James. A man who can only move his eyes got the NFL to stand in a parking lot and pour ice water over its own head, and most of the people doing it had never played a down with him. Here is the part he will not soften. "Almost every neurologist brought up my football career." He has read the research showing former NFL players are roughly four times more likely to develop and die from ALS than other men. He knows what that probably means about where this came from. He has never once said he regrets playing. This month the Titans put him in their Ring of Honor. He was there with his family. He has 11,906 yards from scrimmage and he is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has twin 14 year old sons, an 8 year old daughter named Honey, and a stepson, Lee, who is a junior at Florida A&M. He used to coach their teams. He used to take them on five mile walks. Lee said the thing that will stay with you. "Nothing has changed from what he tries to do. It's just physical." The man is still in there. The body quit on him. Asked what he wants now, Johnson typed it out with his eyes. "I just want more time with the people I love." Our hearts break every single day. Every single dog deserves love, being safe and have someone that cares for them. That being said, it's the seniors that send us into a place we can't explain. We understand life happens. We understand that life's priorities shift. What we don't understand is leaving your pets behind for whatever reason. Loki is a 13years old dog that was surrendered to the NYCACC due to landlord issues. We have questions. Was this a new move? Was this an 'excuse" in order to get out of vetting? Questions that will never be answered. His owners had this to say about him: Loki is social, affectionate, couch potato that can sometimes be mellow and quiet. They stated that he likes to spend his time where his people are. Loki loves going for a car ride and knows the cues come, sit, stay, down, give paw and what's your name. Loki has spent time in XL crate, but is reported not to do well in it. Loki’s owner said that their very favorite thing about this sweet, good boy is that “He loves to put his paw out for more pets when he wants more pets. He also face-licks, and loves laying down with his people.” We are so grateful one of our caring, long time foster stepped up to foster him and give him the dignity he so deserves. He is going to the vet this week where we're going to check out his arthritis to make sure he's comfortable. It seems he's having issues walking and we want to make sure he's comfortable. I was going through some of my things and found this that I wrote on March 7, 2024. This photo was taken that same day with Zurita, one of our rescue dogs at the time. She has since been adopted, but I read these words again tonight and wanted to share them because, more than two years later, every word is still true. “One of the most profound feelings on this plane is knowing an animal trusts you — and trusts you with its life. When you look into its eyes, you can feel with every fiber of your being the depth to which it trusts you. To bring an animal into your life that has known suffering — true suffering — and to gain its trust is otherworldly. To take the time and practice the patience needed to heal its wounds, not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, and yes, even spiritually, is a gift. To gain the full trust of an animal is a privilege. The love that exists at LHRR is, in my opinion, unmatched. Every animal saved is a part of us. They each steal a piece of our hearts, and we carry them with us for the rest of our days. We work tirelessly to gain their trust and to be worthy of their transcending, unconditional love. If you look into the eyes of an animal, it will tell you everything you need to know. You will learn its past, its fears, its insecurities, what it needs, and what makes it happy. They will bare their souls to you if you take the time to listen. Animals are magnificent creatures, capable of holding a capacity for love that humans cannot even imagine. The way in which they trust and give themselves over to you fully is a bridge humans don’t have the capability of crossing. As a rescuer, the best compliment I ever receive is, “I know how much you love your animals. I can feel the love between you and all of them, each and every one.” LHRR is special in so many ways. We rescue dogs from shelters facing euthanasia. We rescue strays and medical cases. We have rescued from dog-fighting situations. We take behavioral dogs that no one else will. We offer sanctuary to those who are unadoptable. We provide rehabilitation and training. We help other rescues when they need it. We always stand behind our dogs. We have maintained a 100% save rate, and our family has expanded far beyond dogs. But what I am most proud of — and what I believe makes us truly special — is the unbreakable bond we form with our rescues. They truly are family. They are a part of us. The love we share is sincere, authentic, genuine, and very real.” And that part has never changed. A lot has changed since I wrote this in 2024. We didn’t make it to Oregon. Instead, we purchased 20 acres in Texas and continued building a home and sanctuary for the animals who depend on us. Some of the dogs I was loving when I wrote these words have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Their absence is felt every single day, and they will always be part of this rescue and part of me. And since then, new dogs have come through our gates and made LHRR their home. More lives have found safety here. More animals have learned that they are loved, protected, and finally home. The mission is still the same. Love them. Protect them. Give them the time they need. And never give up on them. But building and maintaining this place takes an incredible amount of money. We still have so much we need to build and improve here, while also covering food, veterinary care, utilities, housing, supplies, and the everyday bills that keep this sanctuary running. Right now, during our birthday fundraiser, we desperately need your help. Maggie was one of my fosters long before I started my own rescue. I already had a foster when a plea went out for dogs who needed rescue tags by the next day or they would be euthanized. There was something about Maggie’s picture I couldn’t let go of. When I got her, she was severely emaciated and terrified. The vet said he could see her heartbeat through her chest because she was so thin. It took 24 hours to get her inside from the garage, and two more days before she would move from the rug by my front door. She had been deeply abused, but she was still so sweet. I knew she needed someone who would understand her, so I adopted her. Maggie has stranger danger. She has bitten when people entered her space. When I got pregnant, people told me to get rid of her because they were convinced she would hurt my son. Today Maggie is 14, and my son is almost 8. She has never—not once—so much as growled at him. She would protect him with her life. Maggie was my first real experience with a “behavior dog,” and she taught me what patience, safety, and love can do. I think she is a huge reason I fight so hard for the misunderstood ones today. Our birthday fundraiser runs through September 8th, and we still need $2,200 to reach our match.
