"Old Q" (1895) by J R Robinson details the scandalous life of William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensberry, a notorious Georgian gambler and ancestor to Lord Alfred Douglas. Both men shared a fierce non-conformity, a magnet for public scandal, and a legacy of aristocratic rebellion.
My 1896 rare first edition of Poèmes by Lord Alfred Douglas ("Bosie"), published in Paris by Mercure de France. Featuring "Two Loves", (with the line "the love that dare not speak its name"), this scarce bilingual volume was published while Oscar Wilde was still in prison.
The Marquess of Queensberry rode in the 1873 Grand National, Liverpool. Riding True Blue and sporting the Queensberry colours of green with salmon pink arms, he was unseated from the horse and retired from the race. His son Lord Alfred Douglas, was only 3 yrs old at that date.
I've always been curious about the witnesses (Panthers) in the Oscar Wilde case. Not a great deal is known about them. No photographic images exist. What became of them. Just for fun I asked AI to create a human like image from a court room sketch. I give you Mr Charles Parker.
Oscar Wilde and Myself was published in 1914. It is Lord Alfred Douglas’s memoir, my copy features the original dust jacket and has been inscribed by Lord A Douglas in June 1919. It serves as his vicious response to De Profundis. In it, Douglas blames Wilde for his own ruin.
Richard Le Gallienne was born in Liverpool, England. In 1883, his father took him to a lecture by Oscar Wilde in Birkenhead. In the summer of 1888 he met Wilde and the two had a brief affair. Seems to be between the 1886 Ross relationship and start of the 1891 Bosie relationship.
What is the connection between Oscar Wilde and the Liverpool-born writer, Richard Le Gallienne—a relationship that began with their exchanging books of poetry, Wilde inscribing his: "To Richard le Gallienne, poet and lover, from Oscar Wilde a summer day in June '88."
Newspaper report of Oscar Wilde's death the previous day in Paris. Interesting to read Le Journal says it is rumored that Wilde committed suicide.
James Tissot's painting, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Portrait of Catherine Smith Gill and her two children (1877). Oscar Wilde harshly critiqued Tissot's style, writing, "unscrupulousness in painting uninteresting objects in an uninteresting way." A revealing comment.
I found this interesting short article from when Lord Alfred Douglas was in his 70's. I get the impression that the happiest time in his life was when he was a child. For him to have kept these books well into old age was quite touching. @OscarWildeUK
Reading from my signed copy of Ellen Terry's biography I was interested to read her description of her departure from Liverpool on her US tour. I can only imagine the conversations Ellen Terry, Lillie Langtry and Oscar Wilde had on the boat train to l'pool. @OscarWildeUK
A vintage newspaper clipping published during those critical days, detailing Oscar Wilde's bail hearing at Bow-street Police-court, where Lord Douglas of Hawick and Rev. Stewart Headlam agreed to act as his £1,250 sureties before his release from gaol.
Passenger list showing Lord Alfred Douglas, (Bosie) arriving in Liverpool, England on 23 Jan 1902 aboard the RMS Teutonic (White Star Dominion Line) after departing from New York. His mission to secure a rich bride somewhat failed.
The 9th Marquess of Queensberry (John Douglas, famous for boxing rules & Oscar Wilde's downfall) and his wife Sibyl (née Montgomery), parents of Lord Alfred Douglas. Their volatile marriage ended in a bitter 1887 divorce.
