This is Chief Irabor Ologbosere. When British forces invaded the Benin Kingdom in 1897 — burning the royal palace and stealing thousands of priceless Bronze art — Ologbosere refused to kowtow. As a Benin warchief, he took to the forests and waged a fierce, two-year guerrilla war against the invaders. He raided colonial outposts and tore down British flags, stubbornly defending his homeland's sovereignty. The British couldn't defeat him on the battlefield. Instead, they resorted to burning down entire civilian villages and destroying food crops to starve out his support network. Even when he was finally captured and stood in chains before a British colonial court, he remained unbroken. Photographed unflinchingly moments before his execution on June 28, 1899, Ologbosere stood as living proof that our ancestors did not just watch their empire fall — they fought back with everything they had. You told your congregation that England's civilization began with the message of the cross, and that America got its buildings and infrastructure from its revivals. Here is what you left out. England had been Christian for more than a thousand years before its industrial boom. Ethiopia was Christian centuries before England. Faith alone does not explain the wealth. One can even argue that it had little to zero role in it. In 1860, cotton made up more than 60% of American exports. Four million enslaved people picked it. On paper, those people were worth more than all the North's railroads and factories combined. When Britain abolished slavery in 1833, it paid £20 million in compensation. The money went to the slave owners, not the enslaved, and it was about 40% of government spending that year. Britain only finished paying off the loan in 2015. And the revivals? In 1845, Southern Baptists broke away from northern Baptists over slavery. Their own convention apologized for it 150 years later. 12.5 million Africans were forced onto slave ships. Nearly 2 million died before they reached land. They had names. Their blood is in those buildings. People trust you. When you get history wrong from the pulpit, they go home believing it. Teaching the truth takes nothing away from the gospel. But you cannot stand on the graves of millions and give all the credit to revival. Do better.

The last day I went to Church and decided to take Atheism seriously was when a Pentecostal pastor, in my very eyes, in his sermon, was telling us how he was in a bus accident where a bus tumbled and spun into a ravine. Angels came in and held him in such a way that, as the bus spun, he was suspended in the air inside the bus, so that nothing touched him. Then everyone in the bus died apart from him, and he was grateful to God. It was traumatic to me because I lost my twin brother in a similar circumstance in a car, and all my childhood friends died along and I was the only survivor who went into a state of coma for over 3 months. And it was disgusting to me that he was having a victory walk over other people's deaths when I felt guilty for almost half my life that it would have been me. I realised Christianity feign to teach morality, while in reality evil has to befall other people and spare only you for the Christian God to be great. And then they heartlessly consider this a good testimony. That was the final straw, and I said: "Fuck the Church!" and never looked back. If I asked you who stopped the killing of twins in Nigeria, subconsciously your brain would think of a certain white missionary called Mary Slessor, but actually, it was all Hollywood. It is one of those stories that was modified to sell us that our ancestors were some blood-sucking savages until the white men and women in shining armor came and saved us all. And when you understand that, you will see why some Nigerians subconsciously jump to the defense of the West when you call them out. At a very young age, we were taught to memorize: Who named Nigeria? (A white woman.) Who discovered the River Niger? (A white man.) Even though he was probably directed to the river by the black natives, but hey, he discovered it. Who stopped the killing of twins? Mary Slessor. They would even ask us in tests and exams and give us marks with tiny, cute stars when we got it right. So we were literally trained like dogs to see white people as heroes right from a young age. But in reality, it is far less glamorous than they made it out to be. Black people had been pushing against and even abolishing twin infanticide some 100 years before Mary Slessor ever set foot on the continent of Africa. Edem Efiom Ekpo (Duke Ephraim I) rescued his sister and her twin sons and set up the first Efik settlement that abolished the killing of twins, over a hundred years before Mary Slessor arrived. King Eyo Honesty II of Creek Town was very instrumental in abolishing twin killing and human sacrifice when no other chief in the community was willing to undermine the religious and social base. He called these customs foolish, even though he never converted to Christianity himself. So he acted as a ruler reshaping his own society, not as a convert following orders. Ekpe (Egbo) society and the Efik chiefs were the real enforcement machinery. Nothing changed in Calabar unless its senior titleholders agreed to make it law. In June 1853, they ended human sacrifice by the strictest Egbo law possible. They also attacked twin killing through the same channel in the same period. And even when Slessor worked inland from the late 1880s, she depended on African patrons. Chief Edem and the powerful Okoyong woman Ma Eme protected her and backed her rulings. Without them, she would have had no standing in Okoyong. And in the Niger region, Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther and African CMS agents worked against twin killing among Igbo communities. And twin killing as a whole wasn’t even a whole-Nigeria problem; it was concentrated in the south, especially among the Efik, Ibibio, and Igbo in the southeast. In 1876, most of the north was under the Sokoto Caliphate or the Borno Empire, and Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri societies were Muslim and did not kill twins. Islamic law forbade infanticide, and twins were not treated as abominations there. Some non-Muslim communities in the Middle Belt and other fringe areas had their own beliefs about twins, and a few treated them as ill omens. But the practice was never the regional norm the way it was in parts of the southeast. But the record was skewed and generalized to create white heroes, just as they continued to do in Hollywood movies, and unfortunately, we retained that botched history even after independence. That is why you see some Nigerians start frantically calling on Western leaders to come and save them whenever they are in trouble, because they have been programmed to see the white man as the hero. This further validates the Marxist concept of False Consciousness and Antonio Gramsci's theory of Cultural Hegemony. These frameworks explain that the ruling capitalist class dictates the dominant ideology of society, manipulating cultural, educational, and institutional narratives so effectively that the oppressed and exploited working class assumes that what is good for their master is inherently good for them. At this stage, the masses have no independent political ideals. This is how history gets incrementally rewritten because nobody pushes back on narratives like this. In reality, no generation in Nigeria ever actually "listened" to Fela. At NO point was he ever embraced by Nigeria's western-educated classes. He was always an outsider and a rebel that they treated with suspicion or outright hostility. Even the wealthy or educated who liked him had to literally hide to do so. His music was (and to the best of my knowledge still is!) banned from radio nationwide, and it eventually got to the point where he made less money in Nigeria - his primary audience - than outside it. I grew up on a street where a few houses away was Air Vice Marshall Funsho Martins, across the street was Governor Ita Ikpeme, around the corner was Fidelity Bank MD Reginald Ihejiahi, and so on. These were the people I would often overhear having conversations with my dad, and to them, Fela was an "amugbo boy" (weed smoking loser) and community penis who used the guise of African pride to cover for his lack of personal discipline. They had no respect for what he stood for, and I personally was not allowed to listen to Fela's music while I lived under my parents' roof. Fela was never loved by the people who were politically aware or active in Nigeria. The only people who wholeheartedly embraced Fela were the poorest and most powerless. And even at that, they lacked the education to fully understand his message beyond simple complaint and criticism of the Nigerian government. All his words about colonialism and imperialism flew completely over their heads. It was like explaining the International Space Station to someone who has never seen an internal combustion engine before. I hate the narrative that Nigeria ever truly embraced Fela or his message because that is a laundering device for Nigerians to avoid asking themselves what on earth was so important about that message that a military government invaded his house, raped his wives and killed his mom, while the global "human rights" yappers provided cover for that government and never sanctioned them for it. Saying that there was a generation that "listened to Fela" is an easy and disingenuous way of dismissing Fela's work and refusing to examine what made it so important that we're still talking about him nearly 3 decades after he died.

In 1976, Nigerian journalist Sam Ogun confessed to DRUM that he had spent nearly 10 years spying on Nigeria for the CIA. He also warned that many other Nigerians were being recruited to infiltrate different sectors of the country. He told the magazine, "The CIA has so many arms or branches — trade union organisations, educational institutions, cultural organisations. The CIA is the father and through these organisations which are sent to Africa to help developing countries. The agents or officers of these organisations use their organisations as covers to spy for the CIA." Ogun said Nigerians could be recruited without knowing it, benefiting directly or indirectly from development programmes run by organisations he claimed were linked to foreign intelligence networks. "You don't apply to be an agent or spy. You are spotted, trailed, and an assessment is made of you without your knowing," he said. His own career as a spy began in the early 1960s, when he worked as an "information officer" for the American Motion Picture Export Company. An American film distributor known as Jack paid him to write reviews of foreign films for local newspapers, which were then forwarded to New York. Ogun said that was how he was first placed on a payroll. He later confessed to spying on foreign diplomats, trade unionists, civil servants, students and fellow journalists.
