@celestialbe1ng NMDA research. Nitrous oxide -safe, easy, low cost- is highly effective for depression—give it to those who are dying ASAP. While people are dying, we are decades behind. eurekalert.org/news-releases/… But, these will probably have a shorter duration of effect than psychedelics.
@SmartScience That's incorrect. To make that claim, you'd need to compare them to people who continued smoking cigarettes. But you're comparing them to people who quit smoking.
@joannamoncrieff - Antidepressants: mainly placebo effects (shown by Kirsch & Moncrieff). US suicides have risen, so we shouldn’t stop pursuing alternatives. - Psychedelics: rapid effects within hours, lasting months. - Nitrous oxide: similar potential—safe, easy, low-cost.eurekalert.org/news-releases/…

@HenryRunamucker @PGtzsche1 I couldn’t find the source. Please provide it.
@chrisaikenmd The established treatment is exposure therapy, which is similar to mindfulness. The promising pharmacological treatment is psilocybin. On average, sustained effects have also been observed one month later, although there is considerable variability. labs.sciety.org/articles/by?ar…
@drannamedical @chrisaikenmd @Pharmed_Out @Drug_Evidence No, it’s revolutionary as a fast-acting antidepressant that led to esketamine. It’s also effective against substance dependence. The effects on NMDA receptors pave the way for more affordable and safer research into the use of nitrous oxide for depression.
@PGtzsche1 I respect Peter. However, effective treatment is necessary to save lives. Nitrous oxide -safe, easy, low cost- is highly effective for depression—give it to those who are dying ASAP. eurekalert.org/news-releases/…
I am please to announce that the paperback version of Chemically Imbalanced is published on 3rd Sept with new chapters on psychedelics and other routes to recovery. thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/ch…
@PGtzsche1 30 years after the loss of the “Grand Narrative,” people talk about their “wounded selves”—it seems like a cultural illness. It’s not as if our neurotransmitters have gone haywire or our genes have mutated. The solutions are various mindfulness therapies and psychedelics.
@PGtzsche1 Antidepressants don’t help. An immediate effect on suicidal ideation has been reported with ketamine. This has now been confirmed with nitrous oxide. Thirty years after the loss of the “grand narrative,” access to it remains limited. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11…
@DrMcFillin In the wake of cultural shifts that eroded the “grand narrative,” many young people began speaking out about their “wounded selves.” And now, because of comparisons with others on social media, they are more wounded than ever before. Antidepressants don't help.
@fworksconfetti SSRIs, which are nothing more than bundles of placebo effects, and existing antipsychotics that damage the motor system and internal organs—wouldn’t it be a good thing to consign these to the past?
