1. My top imaging trick to trainees is that before they spend any time taking pictures of the data they just sit there for a while & look at the stuff. Like seriously, sit back, crank some tunes, get cozy & spend some quality time with your slides.
5. Too often people just jump in there & take pictures, often of things that fit their prior assumption. This can be disastrous. This is how you get stuff that is not reproducible. So to summarize: SLOW DOWN. Look carefully. Let the data tell you the story & not vice versa.
2. Start by taking a good long look at the controls, familiarize yourself with how things look. Note The variation in the sample. We do a ton of computer assisted image analysis in the lab & let me tell you the human eye & brain remain the undisputed champs of image analysis.
I am pleased to report that my septicemia has receded. Blood cultures are thus far negative, and I feel more energetic. For details, you can read the thread (but you don’t need to). The important bit is: the next genetic screens won’t need to be performed up in heaven.
