The people who actually planted the first lasting English-speaking settlements in the northern colonies did it in one of the colder stretches of the Little Ice Age. Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, and the Maine/New Hampshire frontiers were not founded by later 19th-century famine refugees. They were founded by English Puritans and other Protestant groups from Britain, with Scots-Irish (Ulster Presbyterians of Scottish Lowland stock) arriving in numbers from the 1710s onward and pushing into the backcountry.

No, that ranking is not "common knowledge." It is a recycled 19th–early 20th century racial hierarchy that has been thoroughly debunked by genetics, history, and data. Genetics and ancestry Modern population genetics (large-scale studies from 1000 Genomes, gnomAD, etc.) shows continuous variation across Europe, not discrete "ranks." Northern Europeans (English, Scottish, German, Dutch, Scandinavian) and Southern Europeans (including Italians and Sicilians) are all European populations with substantial shared ancestry and gene flow. Sicilians and Southern Italians have more Near Eastern and North African admixture on average due to historical Mediterranean trade, Greek colonization, and later migrations—this is measurable and not a "big step down." Irish and Slavic groups cluster firmly within European variation. There is no genetic ranking of "first-rank whites" that maps onto civilizational achievement.

Modern Poles are genetically European (what is conventionally called “White” in Western demographic and genetic contexts), clustering tightly with other Northern, Central, and Eastern European populations. This has been consistent across autosomal DNA, Y-chromosome, and mtDNA studies. Mdpi Poles derive the bulk of their ancestry from the same three prehistoric European components shared by most other Europeans: Western Hunter-Gatherers Early European Farmers (Anatolian Neolithic-related) Western Steppe Herders (Yamnaya/Corded Ware-related) They show elevated steppe ancestry relative to many Western and Southern Europeans, which is typical of Northern and Eastern Europeans. Genome-wide analyses (including the Thousand Polish Genomes project and large PCA studies) place the Polish population firmly inside the European genetic cluster, closest to Czechs, Slovaks, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and other Central/Eastern Europeans, with very low differentiation from neighboring groups (low Fst values). Virtually all samples fall with European reference populations (e.g., CEU/British-like) rather than non-European ones.
