@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester I wouldn’t be screaming for anything without considering why they would do that. The reality is that swimming ability and pool usage amongst White people isn’t such an issue and incentive measures (such as dedicated sessions) aren’t needed.
@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester You’re determined to see it this way, but they’re just trying to encourage more Black people to swim. This is a good thing. A couple of hours a month, it’s no impediment to White people.
@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester No one would bat an eyelid if there were dedicated sessions for disabled people, those with autism, other groups who have barriers to swimming. 95% of Black adults in this country can’t swim. Why is that?
@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester No one is claiming Black people are ‘prohibited’ from swimming and white people are not being prevented from learning to swim either. But Black people aren’t participating- why is that? These sessions might be addressing some of these barriers.
@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester That’s probably true, but perhaps the barriers to black people learning to swim are very different - and it’s likely that white people in general are not underrepresented in use of the pool.
@SheenaM78540199@caroldecker@uniofleicester It would depend on the reasons why. Perhaps Black people are underrepresented in swimming ability, perhaps black people are disproportionately represented in drowning statistics.
