#France has reported the first documented case of a human infection with #Shamonda virus, a virus only previously detected in animals. The patient was immunocompromised, which made them more vulnerable to infection and severe disease, and unfortunately died. My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones. Shamonda virus primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is thought to spread between animals by the bites of a midge, which is a small fly-like insect. Further studies are needed to fully understand transmission. The French patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating in animals and where Culicoides midges were also present. @WHO is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 📚 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮: 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮 A new commentary published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific (@LancetRH_WPac) examines the growing burden of youth mental health challenges in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Malaysia, where mental health difficulties among young people have risen significantly in recent years. The commentary was co-authored by Fiona Samuels and Aisling Murray (Wolfson Institute of Population Health @QMUL_WIPH Queen Mary University of London @QMUL); Sharlini Palar (Friends to Mankind); Koggelavani Muniandy (GoodKids Academy); Prem K. Shanmugam (Solace Wellbeing Group); Nur Azmiah Zainuddin (Institute for Health Systems Research @ihsr_my, Ministry of Health Malaysia @KKMPutrajaya); and Johanna Riha @johanna_riha, Paula Morgado, and Claudia A. Lopes @cabreulopes (@UNUGlobalHealth), and highlights the urgent need for stronger research, policies, and services that respond to the needs of young people. The commentary builds on discussions from the Youth Mental Health and Digital Well-Being in Malaysia stakeholder consultation co-convened by UNU Global Health and M-BRIGHT in Kuala Lumpur in May 2026. Bringing together representatives from government, including representatives from Ministry of Health (@KKMPutrajaya), Ministry of Education (@KemPendidikan), Ministry of Digital (@kemdigital_gov), Ministry of Youth and Sports (@KBSMalaysia), the private sector, NGOs, UN agencies, academia and clinicians, the consultation explored priority concerns, service gaps, and opportunities to strengthen support for youth in Malaysia. Key priorities identified included focusing on vulnerable youth populations, addressing the role of digital spaces in youth mental health, strengthening prevention and mental health literacy, expanding pathways to reach young people, engaging parents and families, and integrating mental health within existing education and health systems. The authors also propose establishing a multi-stakeholder Community of Practice to support knowledge sharing, coordinated action, and regional learning across Southeast Asia. YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, Menteri Kesihatan telah hadir ke Sesi Libat Urus Belanjawan 2027, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia bertempat di Ibu Pejabat, KKM hari ini. YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly menegaskan dalam ucapan beliau bahawa Belanjawan 2027 perlu dimanfaatkan sebagai instrumen untuk memperkukuh sistem kesihatan negara serta menghasilkan perubahan yang dapat dirasai secara langsung oleh rakyat. Bertemakan “Menggapai Di Langit Mengakar Di Bumi”, sesi ini menjadi platform untuk menghimpunkan pandangan dan cadangan daripada kementerian serta semua pemegang taruh. Bagi Belanjawan 2027, KKM memberi tumpuan kepada tiga kluster utama meliputi lapan bidang tumpuan iaitu memperkasa perkhidmatan kesihatan rakyat, memperkukuh daya tahan Negara, dan keadilan sosial dan pembangunan untuk semua. KKM turut menekankan bahawa setiap peruntukan perlu berorientasikan hasil dan impak, bukan sekadar jumlah perbelanjaan. Setiap cadangan perlu jelas tentang masalah yang hendak diselesaikan, kumpulan penerima manfaat, perubahan yang ingin dicapai serta kaedah mengukur keberkesanannya. Antara hasil yang telah diterjemahkan daripada keutamaan terdahulu termasuk tambahan RM10 juta pada tahun 2026 bagi rawatan penyakit dermatologi menggunakan ubat biologik, peningkatan peruntukan Penyakit Jarang Jumpa daripada RM25 juta kepada RM42 juta, serta tambahan 106 pesakit baharu yang menerima rawatan. Program Hospital Services Outsourcing Programme (HSOP) turut diteruskan dengan peruntukan sebanyak RM144 juta, manakala skop perkhidmatan diperluaskan daripada 12 kepada 15 perkhidmatan. Dalam aspek pendigitalan, pelaksanaan Rekod Perubatan Elektronik melalui Cloud-Based Clinic Management System pula mencatatkan peningkatan pendigitalan sebanyak 150 peratus dan sedang diperluaskan secara berfasa, selari dengan aspirasi “1 Individu, 1 Rekod”. Secara keseluruhannya, sesi dialog ini adalah ke arah pemerkasaan sumber manusia dan infrastruktur kesihatan, pengukuhan perkhidmatan kesihatan dan kumpulan berkeperluan, kesihatan mental dan kebajikan sosial dan inklusi, aksesibiliti serta transformasi sistem kesihatan. Aspirasi KKM jelas membina sistem kesihatan yang lebih kukuh, berdaya tahan, responsif, digital dan saksama, supaya setiap rakyat, di bandar mahupun di pedalaman, yakin bahawa sistem kesihatan negara akan hadir apabila mereka memerlukannya.
