Around 400,000 people with serious mental illnesses are behind bars in modern America. But Judge Steven Leifman is trying to change how the criminal justice system deals with mental health, after an experience that was “a window on everything that’s wrong with our legal system.”
Too often in America, people with serious mental illnesses are jailed rather than given treatment. But Miami-Dade County is offering a different way forward. “What we learned from the Miami program,” says @NormOrnstein, “is that you can save lives and save money.”
